Biola Wins In PacWest Championships Debut

AZUSA, Calif. -- Biola erased an eight-point deficit in the final four minutes of its first PacWest Championships game, coming from behind to defeat Point Loma, 78-76, on a lay-up by Tatum Brimley in the final seconds of the quarterfinal on Thrusday in the Felix Event Center.

No. 5 seed Biola (19-10) advances with the win over No. 4 Point Loma (18-11) to face the tournament's top seed Hawai`i Pacific on Friday at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific).

It was a 3-point showdown in the first half, which ended tied 40-40 as Biola only made one of its baskets from inside the arc. Stephanie Lee made each of her first three attempts from beyond the arc and finished the game 5 for 7 to lead the Eagles with 16 points. Lee's fifth basket from 3-point territory cut Point Loma's lead down to two with two and half minutes left in the game.

Point Loma made a free throw to push the lead back up to three, and Biola missed its first two attempts to tie the game. After an offensive team rebound on the second miss, Aysia Johnson drove into the lane and got fouled as she made a lay-up for a three-point play that tied the game at 76-76.

The Eagles got a pair of stops to have the ball back with only a few seconds between the game clock and the shot clock. Brimley let the clock wind down and then drove down the left side of the key before rattling the ball in for Biola's first lead of the fourth quarter.

In Point Loma's last chance, they fed the ball into the post to Onjalise Carley-Hilliard, who was double teamed. Her lay-up missed but the ball went out of bounds after Biola with a second left in the game. Then Cara Liggins went for the win on a three-pointer from the wing that bounced out as time expired.

Liggins led all scorers in the game with 27 points, making 6 of 10 shots from beyond the arc. Biola had four players in double figures, including Jazz Benn with 11 points and five rebounds.
