AZUSA, Calif. -- Fresno Pacific used a 7-0 run during the final two minutes of the game to earn a 64-60 win over Concordia on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the PacWest Championships in the Felix Event Center.
No. 6 seed Fresno Pacific (17-12) knocked out No. 3 seed Concordia (17-13) for its first win at the PacWest Championships in program history to keep the season alive. The Sunbirds will advance to play host and No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific in the semifinals. The two teams split their regular season series as both teams won narrowly at home.
Neither team grew a large lead at any point in the game, but Concordia led throughout much of the second half.
Jessica Malazarte, who finished with a game-high 31 points, made a pair of free throws for Sunbirds to tie the game at 56-56 with three minutes to go.
Concordia regained the lead when
Kennedy Fulcher made a baseline jumper. The Sunbirds took the ball out of the net and
Ashley Cross pushed the tempo getting into the key for a lay-up before getting fouled. After Cross knocked down the first free throw,
Felicia Dourva fought for an offensive rebound on the second free throw. The freshman dribbled out to half court to reset the offense. She then drove left and beat her defender to make a lay-up that gave Fresno Pacific its first lead in over six minutes.
Cross then intercepted an entry pass to give Fresno Pacific the ball right back. After she missed a triple, the Sunbirds got another big offensive rebound from
Kate McClard this time. They took advantage of the second opportunity with Cross making a lay-up for a 61-58 lead with less than a minute left.
Concordia's attempt to tie the game with one shot was off the mark and Cross got the defensive rebound. After that, Malazarte made three of four free throws to secure the victory and send the Sunbirds into the semifinals.
Malazarte made 5 of 10 shots from beyond the arc for the Sunbirds.
Jasmine Rachal was the leading scorer for the Eagles as she made 13 points in the first half alone.
