1,744 Student-Athletes Named To Academic All-PacWest Teams

IRVINE, Calif. -- During the 2019-20 academic year, 1,744 student-athletes from around the conference qualified for the annual Academic All-PacWest team, which is a jump of nearly 200 students from the previous year. Biola University led all schools in total selections for the third year in a row with 218 honorees, increasing the total for the third year in a row.

Azusa Pacific had the second most award winners with 213, which is a school record. The Cougars are followed by Concordia with 188 student-athletes listed on the Academic All-PacWest team. Point Loma tallied 152, while Hawai`i Pacific and Holy Names each had 134 student-athletes recognized.

Four different teams reached 30 honorees on their roster led by Biola's women's track & field team with 39, while the women's track & field teams from Concordia and Azusa Pacific had 35 and 30 respectively. Azusa Pacific's baseball team was the only non-track & field team to have 30 players listed.

This year, a record 44 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 grade-point average, topping the record set last year of 37. Nine of those student-athletes were seniors: Jorden Tahquechi, Tressa Buckland, Ryan Johnston, Rebecca Lee, Nina Torio, Kurt Hake, Elle Alexander, Chad Ponciano and Aliyah Morrison.

Student-athletes who achieve at least a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, completed at least two semesters at their institution and participated in regular season competition in a PacWest sponsored sport receive Academic All-PacWest recognition.
