IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai`i Hilo won four special awards to lead the 2021 PacWest Women’s Soccer All-Conference selections with
Daelenn Tokunaga voted as the PacWest Player of the Year by the coaches around the conference.
Lauren O’Malley from Point Loma was voted the PacWest Defender of the Year and Concordia’s
Olivia Ocampo is the PacWest Freshman of the Year. Along with Tokunaga, Hawai`i Hilo’s awards included
Gene Okamura winning Coach of the Year,
Filippa Graneld Newcomer of the Year, and
Viviana Poli is the PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year.
Tokunaga was the PacWest’s statistical leader offensively for the PacWest. She scored 13 goals and assisted four others for 30 points, which led the conference by a large margin. The junior forward had three multi-goal games this year, and scored seven-game winning goals, which is the third most in a single season in PacWest history.
The most important of Tokunaga’s 14 goals this season was her golden goal in the 97
th minute to secure a 1-0 victory over Point Loma. That goal helped make Hawai`i Hilo PacWest Co-Champions and secured the team’s postseason berth. During the Vulcans’ nine-match winning streak to finish the regular season, there were seven games in a row in which Tokunaga either scored or assisted the game-winning goal.
Point Loma finished as the PacWest Co-Champion, which is the team’s third-consecutive PacWest title and
Lauren O’Malley has been a key part to all three of those titles, leading the team’s defense alongside goalkeeper
Emma Hinson. Both of those Sea Lions are now four-time All-PacWest selections. They are the 14
th and 15
th players to win the award for a fourth time in PacWest history joining their former teammate Kegan Bolibol, who was the most recent player to have done it. This year, Point Loma allowed only seven goals in the regular season, which is tied for the least in the PacWest as the Sea Lions recorded eight shutouts.
Graneld earned recognition as the PacWest’s Newcomer of the Year after scoring five goals with five assists this season. She took 55 shots this season, which is the second most in the PacWest. Graneld recorded at least one goal and one assist in three matches this year and scored the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over San Francisco State early in the season.
Ocampo was surrounded by veterans of the PacWest on the offensive line for Concordia, but she was the one to lead the team in scoring this year with eight goals. That total is tied for the third most in the PacWest this year. She also had two assists. Ocampo scored four goals in a span of three games for the Eagles to help them take third place in the PacWest.
Okamura is in his sixth season as the head coach of Hawai`i Hilo and he led the team to its first PacWest title. The Vulcans were picked fifth in the PacWest preseason poll with a roster loaded with transfers that were still learning to play together. After dropping their first two matches, the Vulcans began to start to work better as a group, starting with a 1-0 victory over San Francisco State. Over the next 13 matches, the Vulcans only lost one to finish the year 12-3. In fact, the team went on a nine-match winning streak to end the regular season, tying Point Loma for first place in the PacWest standings.
Hawai`i Hilo was voted to receive four special awards in total after having not won a single award since winning Newcomer of the Year in 2007. The Vulcans also had four first-team All-PacWest selections, including three-time honoree
Jodi Lillie.
Point Loma also had four first-team selections with
Alana Diaz,
Hailey Clifford and
Emma Thrapp joining O’Malley. In total, the Sea Lions have 11 All-PacWest honorees. Azusa Pacific is represented on the first team by
Maddy Morrison, Mackenzie Coleman and
Amy Bishop. Concordia’s
Riley Walkington also earned first-team recognition.
Jadenn Carrillo,
Courtney Jo Seman and
Makenna Herrero all earned their third career All-PacWest honors.
