PacWest Champion Silverswords Lead All-PacWest Team

IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade won its first PacWest title in a quarter century and now the Silverswords have been awarded with four special honors, including Brooklen Pe’a being named the PacWest Player of the Year to highlight the 2021 All-PacWest Team.
 
Pe’a is joined on the All-PacWest team by her teammate Alexia Byrnes, who is the Newcomer and Setter of the Year, while head coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke is the PacWest Coach of the Year. Point Loma’s Courtney Dyer was voted the PacWest Libero of the Year and Ashley Mecham from Academy of Art is the Freshman of the Year.
 
Pe’a led the Swords in points this year as she helped the team go 27-5 during the regular season, which is the most wins of any team in the NCAA West Region. The junior had 322 kills on the season and a .189 hitting percentage. She also had 42 blocks, 250 digs and 30 aces during the regular season. Her best performance of the season was during the first week, when she had 20 kills, 14 digs and four blocks as she led Chaminade to a five-set win over Alaska Fairbanks.
 
Byrnes is the first player to win two different end of the year PacWest awards in conference history as she earned recognition as the Setter and Newcomer of the Year, while also topping the All-PacWest voting. She has 1127 assists so far this year for an average of 9.4 assists per set. Byrnes’ total is the 11th most in PacWest history with a chance to move up the list during the NCAA West Regional. The junior from Chicago also tallied 337 digs and 139 kills with a .272 hitting percentage on the season. In Chaminade’s five-set win at Point Loma, she filled up the stat sheet with a team-high 13 kills to go along with 32 assists and 15 digs for a triple-double. She also had a .619 hitting percentage in the win.
 
Dyer finished the 2021 season with 667 digs, which is the third most in PacWest history. She also averaged 6.47 digs per set, which ranks second in the PacWest all-time. The native of Gilbert, Arizona, posted two performances with more than 40 digs. The first was against Regis in a five-set win and the second came against Westminster, when she made 43 digs in another five-set win. Those 43 digs are the sixth-most in a single match in PacWest history and the most in six years. Dyer also served 40 aces this season, which was tied for the second most in the conference.
 
Mecham made an immediate impact in her first season with Academy of Art, leading the team in kills and points. She averaged 3.2 kills per set with a .207 attack percentage. On the defensive end, she contributed 308 digs and 34 blocks. Mecham recorded 14 double-doubles this season, including a 17-kill, 22-dig performance against Point Loma. She also helped the Urban Knights upset Hawai’i Hilo with 15 kills and 16 digs.
 
Kabalis Hoke won her first PacWest Coach of the Year award after leading Chaminade to the PacWest title. Chaminade finished the year 27-5 overall and 17-3 in conference. The Silverswords defeated MSU Denver in the second week of the season before the Roadrunners went on to be ranked No. 1 in the nation. Chaminade earned its fourth trip to the NCAA West Regional in program history and go into the tournament with an eight-match winning streak.
 
Hawai`i Hilo’s Bria Beale and Biola’s Sami Hover each earned their fourth career All-PacWest honors, becoming the 10th and 11th players in the PacWest to reach this achievement. Hover finishes her career with 2,292 digs, which is the third-highest total in PacWest history, while her 125 career aces rank sixth. Beale also will put her name in the career section of the record book with 1,311 kills, which ranks eighth in PacWest history. She also has 122 aces, which ranks eighth and 3,782 total attacks, ranking tenth.
 
Chaminade is also represented on the All-PacWest First Team by Anna Dalla Vecchia. Biola’s Madison Beebe and Vanessa Garcia also earned first-team honors. Annaka Jorgenson and Bailey Henington from Azusa Pacific each earned their third career All-PacWest honors. Defending PacWest Player of the Year Corinne Acosta earned first-team honors for Fresno Pacific and Brianna Latigue was voted onto the first team for Concordia.
