IRVINE, Calif. – For the second year in a row, Dominican is off to a 2-0 start to the season. The Penguins defeated Fresno Pacific 1-0 on Thursday to take over the No. 1 spot in the PacWest NorCal Pod standings.
Annika Cerini scored the game’s only goal in just the eighth minute, scoring on the first shot of the match by either team. Cerini’s defense then helped the Penguins preserve that lead for the remainder of the game for a shutout victory as
Jacqueline Catano recorded three saves.
Academy of Art got its first win of the season, defeating Holy Names, 2-0. The Sunbirds and Urban Knights now each have one conference win and will face each other on Tuesday at Ramirez Field in Fresno.
Biola got its first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph against Concordia.
Jess Hase scored the opening goal of the game in the 16
th minute and Biola tacked on two more for insurance to secure the win.
Point Loma is now unbeaten in its last 13 regular season matches, winning with shutouts in seven of the last eight. The Sea Lions got a 1-0 victory over Westmont with a goal by
Ashlee Watkins in the 47
th minute that was assisted by
Jazmin Valencia and
Naomi Ellis. This week, Point Loma will host Concordia on Wednesday, while Biola will take on Westmont.

Katelyn Penner, Biola
M, Jr., 5-1 – Beaverton, Ore.
The two-time All-PacWest first-team honoree is off to strong start to her junior season. On Wednesday, she recorded the conference’s first multi-goal game of the season, scoring the second and third goals in Biola’s 3-1 win over Concordia. Penner doubled Biola’s lead in the 36
th minute with her first goal of the season and then added another goal to give Biola a 3-0 lead in the 86
th minute. Biola was outshot in the victory, but found the back of the net on three of the four shots on goal to earn the win.
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brooklyn Morera, Academy of Art
F, Jr., 5-8 – Los Angeles
Morera recorded her first career multi-goal game on Thursday, leading Academy of Art to a 2-0 victory over Holy Names for the Urban Knights first win of the season. Morera scored her first goal in the 26
th minute, which ended up being the game-winning goal. The junior then scored again for some insurance in the 71
st minute. Morera became the second player in the PacWest this season to record a multi-goal game.
