IRVINE, Calif. – PacWest SoCal Pod Champion Azusa Pacific earned three awards to lead the All-PacWest Team selections with
Osvaldo Tovalin being named Player of the Year,
AJ Woodall Pitcher of the Year, and
Paul Svagdis Coach of the Year ahead of this week’s PacWest AQ Pod Series.
Concordia also earned two awards with
Haloa Dudoit repeating as the PacWest Defensive Player of the Year, and
Evan Larsen earning recognition as the Newcomer of the Year. Point Loma’s
Otto Kemp is the PacWest Freshman of the Year and the first-team second baseman.
Tovalin earned his third All-PacWest selection in as many years after he helped the PacWest’s three-time defending champion win the SoCal Pod. The junior third baseman was the PacWest’s leader in hits, runs and slugging percentage. His slugging percentage of .725 currently ranks ninth in PacWest history. Tovalin also had 13 home runs and 10 doubles. During the last three series of the season, he went on a stretch during which he hit a home run in six out of nine games.
Woodall made nine starts this season and earned seven wins with two no-decisions. He threw 58.2 innings with a 2.15 ERA on the season, and he struck out 60 batters. Woodall went as long as eight innings in two of his starts and struck out 10 batters both times, including in a shutout against Fresno Pacific. He made one relief appearance against Biola and struck out two batters to earn a save. He is the first pitcher from Azusa Pacific to have been named PacWest Pitcher of the Year.
Svagdis was voted by his peers as the PacWest Coach of the Year for the fourth year in a row. He is the first baseball coach to earn the award four times and only seven other coaches in PacWest history have been named Coach of the Year four times in a row across all sports. Under the leadership of Svagdis, Azusa Pacific has gone 29-8, including an 11-game winning streak in March. This year, the Cougars led the conference in both batting average and ERA as a team.
Dudoit is the first repeat PacWest Defensive Player of the Year in conference history. He also received his fourth-career All-PacWest recognition, which is the most of any active player. Dudoit helped Concordia go 21-15 so far this season. Playing shortstop, he had a team-high 84 assists and also helped turn 12 double plays. With his leadership, Concordia had the conference’s best fielding percentage this season at .970 with only 21 unearned runs allowed in 36 games.
Larsen transferred to Concordia after spending four years at Cal State Fullerton. He made nine appearances for Concordia and the Eagles won eight of those games. He threw 46.1 innings for Concordia with a 4.08 ERA and earned five wins as he struck out 59 batters. Against Academy of Art he threw 5.1 innings and struck out nine batters to help Concordia get a win.
Kemp finally completed his freshman season that started in 2019, but was derailed once by injuries and then again by the 2020 season getting cut short. The Sea Lions’ second baseman had a .360 batting average on the season with 10 home runs and 21 RBIs in 32 games. He had 11 multi-hit games this year, including two on May 6 as he went a combined 5 for 9 with three home runs, a triple seven RBIs and four runs in a doubleheader against Fresno Pacific.
Azusa Pacific has seven first-team All-PacWest selections, while Concordia has four and Biola has two.
Nick Estrella earned his third career All-PacWest recognition, while Concordia outfielders
Jair Donovan and
Matt Lautz along with designated hitter
Cooper Moore and first baseman
Bailey Collins all earned their second All-PacWest awards.
RobertAnthony Cruz for Biola also earned his second All-PacWest honor.
Noah Barros from Holy Names was the lone player from outside the SoCal Pod that earned a spot on the first team with his 2.54 ERA, 4-2 record and 54 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched.
