NAMPA, Idaho -- Azusa Pacific made it farther than any other PacWest baseball team this year, but the Cougars' season came to an end after two games in the NCAA West Regional when they ran into the red-hot Western Oregon Wolves in a 16-5 loss on Friday at Northwest Nazarene University.
The Cougars finish the season as the PacWest SoCal Pod Champion, the PacWest AQ Pod Series winner and one of three teams to qualify for the NCAA West Regional. Azusa Pacific entered the regional on a 10-game winning streak, but that run came to an end, and the Cougars finished the year with a 33-10 record.
A grand slam for the Wolves early in the game gave Western Oregon the lead after Azusa Pacific had led 1-0. The Wolves expanded that into a 10-1 lead, which ultimately proved to be too much to overcome.
Omar Lopez hit his second home run of the tournament and
Osvaldo Tovalin also hit a home run, which was the 43rd of his career at Azusa Pacific.
Spencer Rasmussen hit his sixth home run in as many games to finish the year with 10 home runs. The freshman earned his spot in the starting lineup over the course of the season, and ended the year as one of the hottest players in the Cougars' lineup. Over the last seven games of the year, he had 29 total bases with eight extra-base hits.
