Biola Takes Slimmest of Early Leads in Commissioner's Cup

On the strength of three championships, Biola is your Fall season leader in the 2022-23 Pacific West Conference Commissioner's Cup.

But the margin of lead is razor thin. The Eagles have 11.8 points, with Point Loma a half a stride behind at 11.5. Concordia is bunched in with the Eagles and Sea Lions as well with 11.1 points, and Azusa Pacific follows closely in fourth place at 10.4.

The PacWest Commissioner's Cup scoring system awards points to schools based on their finishes in conference-sponsored sports. Point totals vary from sport to sport and are based upon the number of schools competing. Regular-season standings are used for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, while the results of the conference championships in the sports of cross country, golf and tennis. When teams are tied in the standings, the points awarded to those positions are added together then distributed evenly among the schools.

Fall sports include volleyball, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's cross country. Biola won both cross country titles and tied with Dominican for the men's soccer banner. Point Loma didn't claim a PacWest title but tied for second in volleyball, was second in women's soccer and tied for third in men's soccer. 

Concordia tallied their points the same way, with solid showings in all Fall sports. The Golden Eagles finished no worse than fourth place in any of the five sports for a total of 55.5 points (11.1 average). Azusa Pacific was second in both men's and women's cross country and finished fourth in women's soccer for 52 points (10.4).

In total, Biola won two titles outright and tied with Dominican for the men's soccer crown. Hawai`i Hilo won the women's soccer championship and Chaminade won the volleyball banner.

Azusa Pacific was the 2021-22 PacWest Commissioner's Cup winner, picking up their third consecutive title. Biola was second. The Cougars built an early lead with 60 points through the Fall seasons.

Men's and women's basketball will supply the next Commissioner's Cup points, followed by a busy spring session that will included baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field.
