Point Loma’s Halligan Named Pitcher and Player of the Year

IRVINE, Calif. – PacWest Champion Point Loma won five of the six special awards and landed four players on the All-PacWest first team, including Baxter Halligan, who became just he second player in PacWest history to be named Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year in the same season.

Halligan joins Hawai`i Pacific’s Kaimi Mead from 2008 to become the second player to win both awards. Halligan played key roles in the Sea Lions being the No. 1 team in the NCAA West Region this season both with the bat and on the mound. His teammates Scott Anderson and Jakob Christian were named the Defensive Player and Freshman of the Year, while Justin James is the PacWest Coach of the Year. Biola’s Oscar Serratos earned recognition as the PacWest Newcomer of the Year.

Halligan had a 2.28 ERA and a .333 batting average this season as he helped the Sea Lions tie the PacWest record of 43 wins in a season. On the mound, he has won 11 games, which also ties a PacWest single season record as he has struck out 96 batters in 75 innings pitched. He needs just 14 more strikeouts to tie the PacWest record that was set this season by Noah Barros for Holy Names.

At the plate, Halligan has eight home runs and 40 RBIs. During the season, he had a nine-game hitting streak and an eight-game walk streak during that run. The Sea Lions cracked the top-10 list in PacWest history for walks in a single season and Halligan collected 35 of those walks, helping him earn a .470 on-base percentage.

Anderson had the second-most hits in the league, but was also a key player for the Sea Lions with the glove this season.  At shortstop, he had a .969 fielding percentage with a team-best 92 assists. He also played a part in 16 doubleplays and made 65 putouts with just five errors. As a team, Point Loma currently holds the PacWest record for single-season fielding percentage at .979, which ranks second in all of NCAA Division II for this season.

Serratos transferred from Young Harris and immediately made an impact as a power-hitting shortstop. He launched 14 home runs, which is the third-most in the PacWest this season, and he drove in 46 runs. He recorded multiple RBIs in each of the first four games of the season and tallied at least four RBIs four times in 48 games. Against Azusa Pacific on March 25, he hit three home runs, which was the only time that was done in the PacWest this season.

Christian had a .339 batting average during his freshman campaign, becoming the second Sea Lion in a row to be named Freshman of the Year and third in four seasons. He ended the regular season on a streak of seven-consecutive games with at least one RBI, including his game with four hits and seven RBIs. He blasted 10 home runs and drove in 50 runs as he collected 15 multi-hit games in 45 games played.

James led the Sea Lions to their first PacWest title and was voted by his peers as the PacWest Coach of the Year. Point Loma has earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional after ending the regular season on a five-game winning streak, which includes a sweep of Fresno Pacific to win the title. Point Loma is 43-7 on the season, needing just one more win to break the single-season record for wins. The Sea Lions went 18-0 in non-conference play, becoming the first PacWest team to have an undefeated record in non-conference play during an entire regular season.

Azusa Pacific’s AJ Woodall became a three-time All-PacWest selection after helping the Cougars earn the No. 2 seed in the NCAA West Regional, which begins on Thursday. Point Loma’s Otto Kemp earned his second All-PacWest honor as he became the sixth player in PacWest history to eclipse 60 runs in a single season.

Aaron Roose, Omar Lopez and Tido Robles from Azusa Pacific, Evan Larsen from Concordia, Dylan Miller from Point Loma, Halligan and Barros all earned their second All-PacWest awards. Khalid Johnson, who broke the PacWest record for steals in a single season with 34, was a first-team All-PacWest selection for Fresno Pacific.
