SAN DIEGO -- Azusa Pacific won a record seven PacWest titles this season to defend the Commissioner's Cup after having won it for the first time in 2018-19 as the Cougars set a new conference record for highest score 13.38 by finishing in the top-2 in the conference in all six spring sports sponsored by Azusa Pacific.
 
The current formula for the PacWest Commissioner's Cup was adopted in 2013-14 when the conference expanded with the addition of four new members. Azusa Pacific has now broken the record for highest average score, winning the award for the second time in a row after the award was canceled during the previous two academic years.
 
Azusa Pacific joins Hawai`i Pacific and California Baptist as the only PacWest schools to have won the award multiple times. When the Cougars first won the award in 2019, they tied the previous record of six conference titles in one season, breaking that record this year at the PacWest Track & Field Championships, winning both trophies.
 
Azusa Pacific now has 39 PacWest titles all-time, which breaks the record of 36 among active schools set by Hawai`i Pacific. Azusa Pacific has now won 23 of the last 56 PacWest titles going back to the spring of 2018.
 
The Cougars were in the lead in the Commissioner's Cup standings after the winter season with titles in men's soccer and women's basketball, with the Cougars also winning the tournament title in women's basketball. Then Azusa Pacific added four more titles in the spring.
 
The first two titles both came in tennis, where Azusa Pacific entered the tournament seeded No. 2 in the conference for both men and women, while Hawai`i Pacific was the top seed. The top seeds faced each other in the championship matches, and the Cougars won both matches, saving three championship points in the men's tennis final. It is only the second time in conference history that one school won both the men's and women's tennis titles.
 
In track & field, Azusa Pacific continued to dominate the meet, winning both the men's and women's titles for the sixth year in a row. It is the third-longest streak of titles in any sport in conference history behind only BYU-Hawaii women's tennis (16) and California Baptist men's cross country (7). Azusa Pacific set a conference record for highest score in meet history on the men's side and largest margin of victory on the women's side.
 
The Cougars also finished runner-up in both baseball and softball, adding 13 points in both sports. Azusa Pacific earned runner-up points in four sports during the 2021-22 season.
 
Biola took second place in the Commissioner's Cup standings, which is the best finish for the school after having previously taken fourth place. The Eagles had a score of 10.29 points after having won the conference title in women's golf. It was the first PacWest title for the Eagles in women's golf and the third PacWest title for the school.
 
Point Loma took third place, which is the second-best result for the school. The Sea Lions won the conference title in baseball, and was ranked the No. 1 team in the West Region throughout the season. Point Loma won a PacWest title in each of the three seasons this year, pushing the school's total to 12 titles.
 
Concordia won the softball title by starting the year with a 36-0 overall record, and was the fastest team to have clinched a PacWest title, raising to as high as No. 1 in the NFCA rankings during the season. The Eagles took fourth place in the Commissioner's Cup standings.
 
Hawai`i Hilo improved its spot in the Commissioner's Cup standings for the season time in a row, taking fifth place, which is the school's best finish in over a decade. The Vulcans finished runner-up in men's golf with the title being determined in a playoff round for the first time.
 
Fresno Pacific took sixth place, followed by Academy of Art in seventh. The Urban Knights had the fifth-best total score in the PacWest. Hawai`i Pacific, which won the men's golf title took eighth place in the Commissioner's Cup standings. The Sharks also earned runner-up points in men's and women's tennis to raise their score more than one and a half points since the winter update. Dominican, Chaminade, and Holy Names rounded out the standings.
