IRVINE, Calif. -- For the 11th time in the 15-year history of the Academic Achievement Award, Dominican University has been named the award winner as the school with the highest student-athlete grade-point average as the conference as a whole recorded a 3.30 GPA or better for a record third year in a row.
Dominican topped the PacWest with a 3.505 GPA, which is now the third-best in conference history and would have been a new record just one year ago. Point Loma, which won the Academic Achievement Award in 2020, earned a second-consecutive second-place finish with a 3.43 GPA, which also cracks the top-10 in conference history, putting the Sea Lions in the top-10 three times.
Chaminade took third place, just one-hundredth behind Point Loma, with a 3.42 GPA, which sets a new school record for the Silverswords. Azusa Pacific and Biola round out the top-5 for the 2021-22 season with Hawai`i Pacific also finishing ahead of the conference average.
Holy Names set a new school record with a 3.28 GPA as did Hawai`i Hilo at 3.20 GPA, making it a record-breaking year for three of the PacWest's 11 schools.
"A streak of three-consecutive years with a 3.30 GPA or better for the entire conference is something for us to be very proud of as we continue building a tradition of academic excellence for our student-athletes," Commissioner
Bob Hogue said. "Congratulations to Dominican on a historic 11th Academic Achievement Award and all our student-athletes on a job well done!"
The PacWest's annual Male & Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards will be announced later this afternoon.
