Chaminade Throws WSOC Race into Chaos with Win over CUI

With one week to go, six teams still vying for top spot

Chaminade stayed alive in the conference race with a massive victory over No. 5 nationally ranked CUI to gain Team of the Week and Player of the Week (Haley Mo`okini). Biola's keeper Autum Monty didn't give up a goal in two matches to receive the Defender of the Week. With one week to go, six PacWest teams are still technically alive for at least a share of the title.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chaminade's Haley Mo`okini, D, Soph., 5-7, San Gabriel, Calif.
Haley Mo`okini found the back of the net twice in a home upset of No. 5 ranked Concordia to lead the Silverswords to a 2-1 victory. The sophomore scored the first goal of the game in the 57th minute to get her team on the board, and then deposited a penalty kick in the 71st minute for insurance. It's the second Player of the Week award for Mo`okini, who has seven goals on the season, fourth best in the PacWest.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Biola's Autum Monty, GK, Jr., 5-5, Visalia, Calif.
Autum Monty didn't give up a goal in two matches last week as Biola tied Dominican (0-0) and topped Academy of Art (5-0). The junior keeper saved six shots against Dominican and directed her defense in the blanking of the Urban Knights. Those were the second and third shutouts of the season for Monty, who started at San Jose State before transferring to Biola this season. On the season, she has a 1.25 GAA and 67 saves, second highest total in the conference.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Chaminade Silverswords
Chaminade pulled off one of the biggest wins of the year with a 2-1 stunner over the previously unbeaten (PacWest) Golden Eagles. Haley Mo`okini scored both goals (see POW) and goalkeeper Naomi Takata had a big match with seven saves. Takata had a blank sheet until Concordia scored late in the 83rd minute. It was the first loss overall for Concordia since their season opener on August 31 against CS Los Angeles. The Silverswords are now 5-2-2 in the PacWest (17 points), still one of six teams alive in the conference hunt. They are 7-4-4 overall.

PACWEST PROGNOSIS: As the final week of the regular season unfolds, there are multiple matches that will help determine the PacWest champion. First off, there are still six teams that are within three points of each other in the conference standings. Four of those teams have one match remaining--Concordia (20 points), Hawai`i Hilo (19 points), Azusa Pacific (18 points) and Chaminade (17 points). Two teams have two matches left--Point Loma (18 points) and Westmont (17 points). The final scenarios are many, but the only clear thing is that if Point Loma wins their final two matches, they are the regular season champ. As a reminder, the conference champion gets the automatic qualifier to the NCAA West Region playoffs, with three at-large spots available amongst the three conferences. Here is the schedule of key matches this week.
Wed---Westmont (5-1-2) at Point Loma (6-2)
Sat.--Concordia (6-1-2) at Westmont, Point Loma at Fresno Pacific, Biola at Azusa Pacific (5-1-3)
Sun.--Hawai`i Hilo (6-2-1) at Chaminade (5-2-2).
