POMONA, Calif.--Defending NCAA national champion Cal Poly Pomona won a hard fought defensive battle with Pacific West Conference title winner Azusa Pacific on Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Field in Pomona, 1-0 in the Third Round of the NCAA West Region tournament.
The Cougars championship season ends at 12-4-5, with their opening match of the year and their final match of 2025 coming up short against the 2024 NCAA winner. Cal Poly continues defense of their title with a 17-2-3 mark, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Broncos scored the lone goal of the contest in the 39th minute via Angelina Rivas. The Broncos had four shots to APU's none in the first half, although the Cougars found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes but it was waved off and ruled offsides.
The second half was even more of a defensive battle. The Cougars got their first shot in the 66th minute by Abbie Campos and added another with five minutes left, but both were saved by CPP keeper Jenna Tetrault. In the final tally, Cal Poly Pomona had seven shots to APU's two.
Azusa Pacific's sucessful season included a 12-win season and their first PacWest title since 2016.
