Cougars Look to make it Seven Times Two

Azusa Pacific chases their seventh consecutive titles in men's and women's track and field this weekend in their own house


AZUSA, Calif.--The Pacific West Conference Track and Field Championships will get underway this Friday at the Cougar Athletic Stadium on Azusa Pacific University’s East Campus. The host Cougars are chasing their seventh straight title in the men’s championship and their seventh consecutive crown on the women’s side.

*The schedule—The action gets underway on Friday at 10 a.m. with the men’s and women’s hammer at nearby Citrus College. The decathlon and heptathlon starts at 1 pm and continues through the day. The only finals are Friday are in the evening featuring the steeplechase and 10,000 meters. Saturday’s Finals Day stars at 9 a.m. with the continuation of the decathlon and heptathlon and picks up at noon with the 4x100 relays. Too see the complete schedules, click here.

*Next Goal—The NCAA Division II National Championships are set for May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colorado at Colorado State-Pueblo.

*Men’s Track Athlete of the Week(s)—Ben Sumner (Azusa Pacific) jetted to the fastest time in the PacWest this year in both the 800 and 1,500 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 13 and 14. He set personal bests in both, clocking 1:48.81 in the two-lap race and he ran 3:45.62 in the 1,500. His time in the longer race ranks sixth in NCAA Division II currently. The sophomore from Palmdale, Calif. is ranked fourth nationally in the 800 meters.

*Men’s Field Athlete of the Week(s)—Lincoln Krog (Azusa Pacific) used the two days at the Bryan Clay to establish a personal best in the decathlon which also happened to be the top tally in the nation to this point of the season. The sophomore from Carson, Wash. (Stevenson HS) totaled 7,311 points, a provisional NCAA qualifier. One of the highlights of his ten events was the discus, where he heaved to a new personal best by over six feet at 138-6 (42.21).

*Women’s Track Athlete of the Week(s)—Selena Arjona-Alcazar (Academy of Art) ran her fastest times of the season in the 100 and 200 meters on April 12 and 13. On that Friday, she raced to a 23.76 clocking in the 200 at the Mt. Sac Relays and the following day ran 11.61 in the 100 at the Bryan Clay. Both marks are tops in the PacWest this year. The eight-time All-American from Panama City, Panama has a personal best of 11.50 in the 100 meters and 23.42 in the 200.

*Women’s Field Athlete of the Week(s)—Esther Conde-Turpin (Azusa Pacific), laid down the heptathlon gauntlet at the Bryan Clay. The French woman tallied a point total of 6,007, a Cougar school record and the top score in the nation this year. Not only does that total top the charts this season, it is the second highest total in NCAA Division II history. The freshman also met the NCAA provisional mark in the long jump (20-4.5) and the javelin (144-7), and long jump distance is third best in D-II this season.
