Today let's meet Chaminade's Rebecca Duran (middle in photo) , who leads the charge to keep the Silversword student-athletes healthy Athletic Trainers on college campuses all across the country treat injuries and help keep their student-athletes healthy. Over the next few weeks, let's meet those that everyone in the atheltic department depends on, a group that works countless hours serving their university. Today, we meet Chaminade University's Rebecca Duran, who returned to campus this spring for her second stint as the Silverswords athletic trainer. She previously served as CUH's head athletic trainer from 2016-19, and was an assistant and grad A.T. prior to that in 2014-15. Rebecca graduated from Lindenwood University, but is a native of Kaneohe, which is perfect for her hobbies of surfing, hiking, rugby and weight training. Why did you become an athletic trainer? My high school athletic trainers (Shout out Sam and Gretchen!) were huge influences. l was in the training room a lot battling my own injuries. I even had to sit out of championship season due to a knee injury. Sam and Gretchen were there to guide, heal and push when I needed them in order to come back from that injury. I fell in love with the profession from then. What do you most like about your job/career? What gets you up in the morning? I love being a support system for the athletes. It gives me great satisfaction to be able to see them thrive on and off the field/ court. Going into work with the intention to help others and meeting that daily is very gratifying. If you were not an athletic trainer, what would you be? Welder Fabricator. I almost went to trade school out of high school for metal work and welding. I was in metal shop class most of high school and loved it. What is the biggest challenge facing your profession currently? Matching the average salary with the job requirements. Masters level health care providers should be compensated as such across the board in the athletic training settings. Funniest Road Trip Moment Having carpool karaoke to make it through a long drive and impressing the athletes with my rendition of Lil wayne's masterpiece "A Mili". Athletes still won't let me live that down. Favorite Binge-Worthy Show Madolorian! Favorite Fast Food Chipotle (only because there are none on island) Your Own Greatest Sporting Moment Having Arnold Schwarzenegger judge my lift at an olympic weight lifting competition. What's Your Favorite Part about Working at Your School? The staff I work with. Chaminade has always felt like home. The coaches and administration foster a culture of mutual respect and kindness. I truly appreciate their support over the years.
