Menlo, Hilo Shoot Their Way to Men's Golf Awards

Oaks and Vulcans win tournaments by convincing margin, Stark and Yamashita medal.

Menlo and Hawai`i Hilo both won tournaments by massive amounts earlier this week, with the Oaks' Jack Stark and Hilo's Katsuhiro (Kevin) Yamashita leading the way with medalist honors.

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Menlo's Jack Stark, Sr., High Wycombe, England                                            
Menlo's Jack Stark edged teammate Paul Hautbourg with a sizzling final round 69 to win the Vanguard Invitational this week at the Oak Valley GC in Beaumont. The senior from England opened the three-round event with a 75, but then caught fire with a 71 and 69 to finished at -1 (Hautbourg finished at +1). Stark had seven birdies in his final round to get to his final tally of 69, the lowest score in the tournament. The second-year Oaks player is the first-ever Menlo golfer to win the PacWest Player of the Week award.

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Katsuhiro Yamashita, Soph., 5-10, Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i        
Hawai`i Hilo's Katsuhiro (Kevin) Yamashita won the Hawai`i Triangular with a two-day, two-course score of -2. On day one, the Big Island native fired a 68 (-2) at Waikoloa and followed that up with an even round 72 at Mauna Lani, site of the 2024 PacWest Championships. Both scorecards were the low score of the day as he went on to top teammate Dysen Park by three shots (+1). Yamashita, who was a member of the UH Hilo's conference title team last year but was not in the top five group, has now been under par in all three tournaments this year: -3 at Saint Martin's and -1 at Western Washington. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Menlo Oaks                                                                                                                    
Menlo dominated play at the Vanguard Invitational, rolling to a 33-stroke win over the host Lions. Menlo had the top four players in the final tally, with Jack Start (see above) leading the way at -1 on the Oak Valley GC. Paul Hautbourg was next at +1, followed by third place Wei Jin Eng (+2) and Emmett Shell in fourth (+6). The Oaks tallied a team score of +5, which included a final round of -3. Menlo had 22 birdies among this top group of four. The Vanguard Invite finishes the Fall campaign for the Oaks, who won two tournaments and were second in another. 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Vanguard's top golfer at their own tournament was Matthew Wilkes in sixth place, who was even par through two rounds and finished at +8. The Lions finished in second place overall of seven teams...Hawai`i Hilo won the Hawai`i Triangular (+13) by 26 strokes over Chaminade and Hawai`i Pacific, who tied at +39. Top golfers for the Silverswords and Sharks were Jack Yeager (CUH) and Kyle Krupp (HPU) who tied for third at +6...Academy of Art was 12th at the Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif., Jessup was 16th, Westmont 17th, and Dominican was 19th. ART U's Giulio Zanichelli continued his hot Fall with three rounds of even-par golf to tie for sixth place. Teammate Anson Park (ART U) and Michael Sorber (Jessup) were the next PacWest golfers on the scorecard at +7, followed by Westmont's Nicholas Rocha (+9) and Dominican's JJ Scott (+12).

LOOKING AHEAD: The Fall portion of the schedule wraps up this coming week, with two tournaments in Hawai`i on the Big Island. Hawai`i Hilo will host the annual Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Monday-Tuesday (Oct. 21-22), with Chaminade, Vanguard and Hawai`i Pacific entered, as well as a host of others from the mainland at the Mauna Lani GC. On Oct. 25-26, those same PacWest teams will participate in the Sharks Shootout at the Waikoloa Resort.
