Silverswords Start Strong But Fall to Gators

Chaminade's third straight NCAA West Region semifinal appearance ends in a heartbreaking loss. 'Swords finish outstanding season at 28-5.

POMONA, Calif.--Pacific West Conference champion Chaminade saw its successful season come to a close at the hands of San Francisco State in the NCAA West Region semifinals on Friday night at Kellogg Arena, 3-1.

Chaminade's 18-match win streak is clipped and the 'Swords wrap up the year with its third straight NCAA West Region semifinal appearance and a 28-5 record. CUH won the first set big, but ultimately fell to the Gators, 13-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21.

San Francisco State (23-6) advances to play fellow CCAA team Cal Poly Pomona in the West Region title match on Saturday night at 5 pm.

The first set belonged to Chaminade by a lot. The Silverswords rolled out to a 21-9 lead and would go on to win, 25-13. They hit a robust .484 in the set, with six kills from Letizia Cammillucci.

CUH, who went unbeaten in PacWest play (20-0), burst out to a 14-9 lead in the second set and stretched that to 16-10, but the Gators began its comeback then. SFSU crawled back to a 20-20 tie. In all, they would score seven of the final eight points in the set to even the match at 1-1 

The third and fourth sets had a similar vibe. Tied at 15-15, the Gators scored 10 of the next 12 points for the 25-17 win. In the fourth, Chaminade pulled out to a 9-4 start, but San Francisco State scored the next six points to draw even. Chaminade was still in the hunt late in the set, trailing 21-20, but the No. 2 seeded Gators closed strong for the 25-21 win. 

Cammillucci led the Silverswords with 16 kills, hitting .368 with 13 digs. Nanna Inoue had 19 digs, Grace Talpash had 40 assists and 11 digs and Mahala Ka`apuni finished with 12 kills
