Cougars Shut Down Two More Opponents

Azusa Pacific records its seventh straight shutout. Hilo also blanks two to remain in first place and Point Loma's Grace Nelson scores twice to lead Sea Lions to win.

Seven PacWest teams went unblemished last week, including Azusa Pacific who recorded their sixth and seventh straight shutouts. Hawai`i Hilo also won twice riding their defense while Concordia saw their five-match shutout streak snapped during a 1-1 tie with Dominican. Eight PacWest teams still have records of .500 or better.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma's Grace Nelson, MF, Jr., 5-7, Boise, Idaho                                            
Point Loma's Grace Nelson scored two of her team's four goals during a 4-0 home over Menlo last week. It was the third-year Sea Lions' first scores of the season and she got her team on the scoreboard with the first one in the 17th minute. The Boise native added another in the 31st minute to help the home team to a 3-0 halftime lead. It was the first two-goal game in the career of the 2024 Third Team All-PacWest player. 

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific's Sophia Emerson, D, Jr., 5-6, Claremont, Calif.                        
Azusa Pacific's Sophia Emerson was a rock in the back line for the Cougars as they recorded an NCAA best sixth and seventh straight shutouts in 2025. APU blanked Dominican and Fresno Pacific by identical 1-0 scores, improving to 4-1-3 on the season and to 1-0 in PacWest play. Emerson has played in all 90 minutes of each APU contests this Fall. "Soph has been one of our best and most consistent players this season," said her coach Brooke Lincoln. "She anchors a backline that has seven straight shutouts. Her ability to not only win balls out of the air but also start the attack makes her extremely valuable. I believe that she is one of the best center backs in the west region."

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific Cougars                                                                                                    
Azusa Pacific is the Team of the Week after another pair of stellar defensive efforts. In turning in blank sheets against Dominican and Fresno Pacific, both by 1-0 scores, the Cougars ran their string of shutting down opponents to seven straight contests. The last time anyone scored on APU was in the season opener when defending national champion and current No. 1 nationall ranked Cal Poly Pomona won 3-1. That scoreless streak is currently tops in Division II. Mayilen Salazar provided a chunk of the offense with a goal and assist over the two games, while keeper Alexia Munoz recorded two more shutouts and a pair of saves.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawai`i Hilo shutout Jessup (2-0) and Fresno Pacific (1-0) to improve to 3-1 in PacWest play with nine points. Mia Berney had two goals in the Jessup match while Lydia Keller added two shutouts with four total saves...Concordia had a win over Westmont (1-0) and a tie with Dominican (1-1). Riley Urquiza (keeper) totaled one goal against and had eight saves, including six against the Warriors. Defender Sloane De Torres scored the tying goal versus the Penguins....Biola's Peyton Nelson scored a goal in each of the Eagles' ties against Jessup and Menlo...Five different players scored as Vanguard defeated Jessup...Chaminade topped rival Hawaii Pacific 1-0 despite six saves from HPU keeper Skylar Jacobsen...Domincan's Angelina Hert had six saves in the loss to Azusa Pacific and added seven more in a 1-1 tie with Concordia...Fresno Pacific's Ayana Kirisimasi totaled 12 saves on the week with two goals against...Jessup's Celeste Fernandez had eight save in 1-1 tie with Biola...Eight PacWest teams have .500 records or much better, including five teams that have just one loss--Concordia (6-1-2), Dominican (4-1-5), Biola (3-1-5), Azusa Pacific (4-1-3), Point Loma (4-2-1), Vanguard (3-3-1), Chaminade (1-1-5) and Hawaii Hilo (4-2-3).

LOOKING AHEAD: 11 matches are slated this week, and finally, all 11 are conference matches. It begins on Tuesday when Jessup travels to Concordia. On Thursday, Azusa Pacific is at Chaminade, Westmont is at Menlo, Vanguard is at Hawaii Pacific and Biola goes to Hawaii Hilo. On Saturday, Biola switches islands to take on Chaminade, Vanguard is in Hilo, Point Loma is at Concordia, Westmont is at Fresno Pacific, Dominican is at Menlo and Azusa Pacific is at Hawaii Pacific. To see the complete list, click here.
