Concordia Records Three Wins for Team of the Week

The Golden Eagles outscored their opponents 7-0 in a trio of wins. Biola's Briley Phelps has a hat trick and assist, while FPU's Kirisimasi gives up zero goals in two matches with 12 total saves.

In the final week prior to PacWest play, Concordia tuned up with three shutout victories. Earlier in the week, Biola's Briley Phelps had three goals and a assist against non-conference opponent Westcliff, while Fresno Pacific's Ayana Kirisimasi kept two opponents out of the goal in a pair of PacWest draws.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Biola's Briley Phelps, MF, Jr., 5-5, Santa Clarita, Calif.                                            
Biola's Briley Phelps recorded her first career hat trick to help her Eagles to a 4-1 win over Westcliff last Monday (Sept. 22) in a non-conference bout at home. The three-year Biola starter scored in the 23rd minute, assisted Marije Rechin in the 28th and added two more scores in the second half at 62 and 76. The 2024 All-PacWest Third Team selection now has six goals on the season, which leads the PacWest while her three assists is second in the conference listing. That puts her at 15 points (2.14 per match), tops in the conference.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific's Ayana Kirisimasi, GK, So., 5-5, San Diego, Calif.                    
Fresno Pacific's Ayana Kirisimasi didn't allow a goal in two matches last week as the Sunbirds opened PacWest play with a pair of 0-0 draws. Against Chaminade, she saw 18 shots including nine on goal. For the week, opponents fired 24 shots her way and she totaled 12 saves. The first-year Sunbird starter has a 0.86 goals against average in four matches and has 25 saves. Her 6.25 saves per contest ranks second in the PacWest and her .893 saves percentage is third in the conference.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Concordia Golden Eagles                                                                                                
Concordia is the Team of the Week after winning all three matches last week without giving up a goal. CUI began the week with a 4-0 conquest of San Francisco State on Monday, using a pair of goals by Sarah Venegas to help take out the Gators. Two days later against CS Monterey Bay, Bella Barrett landed the lone score and the Golden Eagles wrapped up the week with a 2-0 non-confernce win over local rival Vanguard, again using a Barrett score to get on the board. Goalkeeper Riley Urquiza had nine saves on the week in helping lead her team to their fourth straight shutout victory. All three matches this week came on the road as the Golden Eagles improved to 5-1-1 on the season. 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Dominican starts the PacWest season 2-0 after wins over Hawai`i Hilo (2-1) and Chaminade (2-1). Janae Schwan scored twice for the Penguins against the Silverswords. In beating Hawaii Hilo, it was the first win for DUC over the Vulcans since 2017. Dominican is now 4-0-4 on the season...In Biola's lone match of the week, a 4-1 win over Westcliff, Peyton Nelson and Marije Rechin had two assists each to lead to three Briley Phelps goals...Hawai`i Pacific's Skylar Jacobson didn't give up a score in two matches last week, 0-0 ties with Jessup and Fresno Pacific. She had six saves against the Warriors and totaled nine on the week...Five PacWest teams have winning records after the preseason slate--Concordia (5-1-1), Dominican (4-0-4), Biola (3-1-3), Azusa Pacific (2-1-3) and Point Loma (3-2-1). 

LOOKING AHEAD: 11 matches are slated this week, and finally, all 11 are conference matches. That starts today with Hilo at Jessup. On Thursday, Concordia is at Westmont, Menlo is at Point Loma, Jessup is at Biola, Dominican at Azusa Pacific and Hilo is at Fresno Pacific. On Saturday, Jessup travels to Vanguard, Menlo is at Biola, Dominican ventures to Concordia, Hawaii Pacific plays at Chaminade and Fresno Pacific goes to Azusa Pacific.  To see the complete list, click here.
