Sunbirds, Sea Lions and Silverswords Continue Roll

All three go unbeaten last week, as does Vanguard. That foursome of teams win the weekly awards.

Four PacWest teams played without a loss last week and all four shared in PacWest Player of the Week honors. Two of those teams, Point Loma (13-1) and Fresno Pacific (12-0) will play tonight (Monday) in a non-conference showdown. The Sunbirds will enter the match as the PacWest Team of the Week and Point Loma features the Player of the Week in Abigail Nua. Chaminade and Vanguard won two matches each last week and share the Defender of the Week in Sina Bauer and Morgan Cole.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma's Abigail Nua, Sr., OH, 5-10, Lakewood, Colo.                                
Point Loma's Abigail Nua led her Sea Lion team to three more victories last week, taking out Hawaii Hilo, Domincan and Menlo. Against the Vulcans, Nua rained down 22 kills in just three sets, hitting .378 along the way. The 22 kills is the most in a three-set match in the PacWest this year. The 2024 PacWest Player of the Year leads the conference by a large margin with 5.13 kills per set and paces the league in points per set with 5.78. It is Nua's 11th PacWest Player of the Week award, second all-time only to BYU Hawaii's ShihTeng Chen with 13. 

DEFENDER(S) OF THE WEEK: Chaminade's Sina Bauer, Soph., DS/L, 5-9, Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany
Chaminade's Sina Bauer played a huge role in the Silverswords' five-set win on the road over Hawai`i Hilo. The Chaminade defensive specialist had 27 digs in the 25-16, 20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-8 victory, the eighth straight for CUH. On the week, the German native totaled 42 digs (4.2 per set). The second-year Silversword now has 13 staight matches with double-figure dig totals, with the 27 digs a career high. 

DEFENDER(S) OF THE WEEK: Vanguard's Morgan Cole, Sr., OH, 5-10, Bakersfield, Calif.                        
Vanguard's Morgan Cole used all-around numbers to help the Lions to a pair of wins and Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. In straight set victories over Biola and Azusa Pacific, Cole had double-double numbers, including 17 digs against the Eagles and 13 against the Cougars. The fourth-year Lion added 15 and 11 kills on the offensive side and additionally had 5 block assists against APU and another versus the Eagles. The Bakersfield native averaged 5.0 digs per set to help Vanguard win their ninth game in ten outings and improve to 11-2.
 
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific Sunbirds                                                                                                
Fresno Pacific swept three more PacWest opponents last week, taking out Dominican, Westmont and Concordia in straight sets. The wins against the Warriors and Golden Eagles were their first two conference matches and they improved to 12-0 overall. Mikayla Weiss played a big all-around role with 68 assists in the three matches and a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs against the Golden Eagles. Geneva Elliott led the defense with six block assists and a .417 hitting percentage against Westmont. The 12-0 start is the best for the Sunbirds since joining Division II. The school record is 26 in a row to open the year (2010). 

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: A near capacity crowd of 2,442 witnessed the Chaminade at Hawaii Hilo match at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Saturday. The Vulcans were hosting the Silverswords in their home for basketball (they normally play volleyball at Vulcan Gymnasium on campus) to accomodate the large crowds that were bolstered by a UH-Manoa men's volleyball scrimmage that followed...Seven of the 13 teams in the PacWest have .500 records or better as teams launch into conference play. Those teams are Fresno Pacific (12-0), Point Loma (12-1), Vanguard (11-2), Hawaii Hilo (11-7), Biola (9-5), Chaminade (11-7), and Westmont (7-7)...Kayden Croy of Concordia had 21 kills in a 5-set loss to Menlo...Jessup's Addie Hamilton had 21 put downs in a four-set win over Westmont...Point Loma's Sophia Baugh had 48 assists in four sets against Menlo and she averaged 11.0 assists per set on the week...Teammate Macy Reynolds had 25 digs in a win over Dominican and averaged 5.4 per set...Rylee Ellis of Westmont averaged 5.1 digs per set with 22 against Hawaii Pacific...Bri Bellfi of Biola had 6.5 digs per set on the week with 20 against Azusa Pacific...Sophia Kelso had seven blocks including four in the fourth set for Menlo against Concordia. In that five-set win for the Oaks over the Golden Eagles, Menlo trailed 2-0 before staying alive with a 33-31 third set win and then captured the next two games 25-20 and 15-7. The Oaks had 77 digs in the match...Chaminade's Lillie Hinton 29 kills, 21 digs, three aces and two blocks in the Silverswords' two wins last week. 

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: 13 matches dot the schedule this week, kicking off with tonight's major match between Point Loma and Fresno Pacific. On Wednesday, Jessup travels to Dominican and Azusa Pacific heads to the islands to first take on Hilo. On Thursday, Menlo is at Fresno Pacific, APU is at Hawaii Pacific and Vanguard makes their way to Hilo. Friday features Westmont at Concordia and Biola at Chaminade and the week wraps on Saturday withy Dominian at Menlo, Westmont at Point Loma, Vanguard at Chaminade, Fresno Pacific at Jessup and Biola at Hawaii Pacific.
