A.D. Spotlight: Fresno Pacific's Kyle Ferguson

We are very proud of our Athletic Directors in the Pacific West Conference. Today, let's meet Fresno Paciic University's Kyle Ferguson.

A college athletic director oversees all aspects of an athletics program, including the hiring of coaches and administrators, scheduling, promoting programs and events, constructing budgets, fund raising and so much more. Over the next few weeks, we will meet the 14 Athletic Directors in the Pacific West Conference.

Today, let's learn more about Fresno Pacific's Kyle Ferguson, who has been the A.D. at FPU since July of 2023. Ferguson has a diverse background, serving as the Chair of Humanities and as a assistant professor at Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho) before coming to Fresno. He has also been an admissions counselor, sports information director and eventually athletic director at San Diego Christian College.

Kyle earned his undergrad degree at York University (Neb.), and gained his master's at Spring Arbor University. He is currently working on his doctorate in Higher Education Administration at Idaho State. He and wife Lori live in Fresno with their four children Brookelyn, Bonnie, Claire, and Koufax.

What was your first job in college athletics?
While in college at York University (Nebraska), I worked various jobs in the athletic department. My first professional role was as the Sports Information Director at San Diego Christian College.

When did you first realize you wanted to be an A.D.?
In college, I really enjoyed working with our A.D., Chris Luther. I saw the impact the role could have and realized it is a challenging and rewarding way to serve student-athletes.

Who have been some of your mentors during your career, and what have you learned from them?
I’ve been blessed with many mentors throughout my career. My father and brother have been my biggest influences, and I don’t take for granted that I’ve had two great examples of leadership my entire life.
Early in my career, Dave Maddox helped me understand what it means to lead with love, even when it’s difficult. Chris Bando taught me about humility and kindness—he still sends me scripture daily. More recently, Jeff Pernsteiner has reinforced the importance of authenticity and vulnerability. At FPU, Paul Blezien has been instrumental in guiding me, showing me how trust is earned and what it means to truly care for those you lead.

What advice would you give someone interested in a career in college athletics administration?
Get your foot in the door, do the small things well, and let people see you know how to work. I always use Lucas Armstrong as an example—when I was at San Diego Christian, he volunteered a few hours a week, showed a great attitude, and worked hard. When I had an opening, he was the obvious choice. College athletics is built on relationships and work ethic. Be willing to start small, learn every aspect of the business, and always add value.

Your Own Greatest Sporting Moment as a Coach or Player?
I can’t pinpoint one specific moment, but the relationships built through sports—both as a player and during my short time coaching high school—have been the most meaningful part of the experience.

Your Favorite Team or Athlete of All Time and Why?
The 2015 Kansas City Royals. After a 30-year drought between World Series titles (and not remembering ’85), that team was special. They stole bases, played great defense, and had an incredible bullpen. They weren’t built on superstars but were the definition of a team. Their motto, "keep the line moving," was a perfect reflection of how they played—picking each other up all season and throughout the playoffs.
