Cold Start Seals Sea Lions Fate

Central Washington jumps out quickly on Point Loma in WBB West Regional, too much to recover from. Highly successful Point Loma season ends at 25-6.

CARSON, Calif.--A cold start against a good team was too much to overcome for the Point Loma women's basketball team.

#6 seed Central Washington upended #3 seed Point Loma 74-53 on Friday morning at the NCAA West Regional women's basketball tournament. That ends the Sea Lions championship season at 25-6, while the Wildcats advance to the semifinals with a 22-7 mark.

Central Washington ran out to a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game, and parlayed that into a 11-0 run to the end of the first quarter. That gave the Wildcats a 21-4 lead, as the Sea Lions couldn't connect.

That CWU lead increased to 23-4 before the Sea Lions, winners of both the PacWest regular season and tournament titles, could get back on the board. Tavia Rowell's three-pointer helped, but the Wildcats increased their lead to 39-12 at halftime. For the first 20 minutes, Point Loma shot 17 percent from the field and was 1-for-9 from three-point range.

CWU pushed its margin slightly to 31 points at the end of the third (62-31) before settling for the final score of 74-53.

Eiley Tippins led the Sea Lions with 12 points. Alli McDonald had eight points and 12 rebounds and Kaylee Byon finished with nine points, four assists and four boards.

Central Washington had four players in double figures, led by Capri Sims who had 15 points and 13 rebounds. CWU will play the winner of the next quarterfinal, Cal Poly Pomona vs. Chico State.
