CARSON, Calif.--No. 1 seed and host CSU Dominguez Hills broke away from No. 8 Azusa Pacific with a 20-10 second quarter advantage to take a 77-58 NCAA West Region quarterfinal win on Friday night at the Toro Dome.
Azusa Pacific's season comes to a close at 22-7, while the Toros advance to the regional semifinals at 32-1.
The Cougars and Toros were deadlocked at 18-18 through the first ten minutes of play. With 6:13 left in the half, the Cougars still trailed by only two points (24-22) after a free throw by Syndey Hani.
But the Toro's, the CCAA regular season and tournament champs, ran off 10 straight points and would eventually take a 38-28 halftime lead. APU would get no closer than those ten points the rest of the night.
CSUDH's Cristina Jones was a force with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Nala Williams added 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
APU's Kelly Heimburger, the PacWest Player of the Year, had 12 points in her final collegiate game. Lauren Jones also had 12 and Rachel Roderick added 10.
This was the fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance for the Cougars.
