ART U Tops Six PacWest Squads

Urban Knights finish fourth at 3-round Sonoma tournament, while Hawai`i Hilo's Ben Crinella finishes even par for fourth on the leader board.

Seven PacWest teams gathered in Sonoma in what was a mini conference tournament preview with Academy of Art finishing fourth overall and on top of the PacWest heap. Hawai`i Hilo's Ben Crinella placed fourth in the same tournament at even par to gain Player of the Week.

Player of the Week: Hawai`i Hilo's Ben Crinella, Soph., 5-8, Huntington Beach, Calif.                    
Hawai`i Hilo's Ben Crinella finished the three-round Sonoma State Spring Invitational with a 70, climbing up to fourth place at even par against a solid field of teams. The sophomore had at least four birdies in each round, and on the final day added only a pair of bogeys to card the lowest score of the day by any player in the CCAA/PacWest field. Crinella, the 2024 PacWest tournament champion, shot a school record 64 earlier this season at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art Urban Knights                                                                        
Academy of Art finished fourth at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational, ahead of six other Pacific West Conference teams. The Urban Knights finished at +32, with a scorecard of +6 in the second round, the lowest score in the tournament for that second 18 holes. ART U finished ahead of two teams ranked ahead of them in the Clippd rankings (Chico State, Sonoma State) and only behind No. 23 ranked CS Monterey Bay (+18), No. 37 Simon Fraser (+27) and CS San Bernardino (+29). The Urban Knights were led by Zachary DuBourdieu (+2) in fifth place, Mario Stump (+9) and Giulio Zanichelli (+10).

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Jessup finished a strong sixth place at the Sonoma tournament with a +37 score, one shot back of fifth place Chico State. Michael Sorber (+5) and Braden Armstein (+6) were the Warriors' top two golfers, in 13th and 19th place respectively...Hawai`i Hilo was next in the field of 15 in seventh place at +44. In addition to Ben Crinella's even scorecard, Dylan Bercan checked in at +7 and Jacob Torres was +11...Menlo was tenth, topped by an excellent tournament from Nicolas-Guy Landry who placed sixth at +2...Dominican was led by an eighth place finish from Daniel Marmorstein (+4)...Vanguard's top golfer was Alex Elia (+11) and Tyler Williams paced Westmont at +17...Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade played at the Stack Cougar-Burro Collegiate at the Velrado GC in Buckeye, Arizona. The Sharks finished 9th in the field (won by #1 ranked Colorado Christian), with MIles Atkinson (+5), Kyle Krupp (+7) and Rico See (+8) leading the way. Chaminade (14th) was paced by Jack Yeager and Ky Stopp, both of whom finished at +12. 

LOOKING AHEAD: The regular season is winding down, with only a couple of tournaments ahead of the Pacific West Conference Championships, set for April 21-23 in North Las Vegas at the Aliante GC. Academy of Art will get a tune-up on April 7-8 at the RJGA Palm Classic in Goodyear, Arizona, and the Urban Knights, Dominican and Vanguard will be in Turlock for Stanislaus State's tournament on April 14-15.
