Biola Wins, So Does PLNU's Reeves

Eagles win their own invitational while Maddie Reeves races to victory at the Cougar Challenge

Biola was the top team at their own meet, racing past 14 other squads including three from the PacWest Conference. At San Marcos, Point Loma's Maddie Reeves set a program record with a six kilometer time of 20:48 to win the Cougar Challenge by ten seconds.

RUNNER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma's Maddie Reeves, Sr., 5-6, Peoria, Ariz.                                                                
Point Loma's Maddie Reeves raced away from a talented field to win the CSU San Marcos Cougar Challenge. Reeves won the 6K race by ten seconds over CSUSM's Angela McManus, smashing the Point Loma school record that she also owned (21:05), set last year when the Arizona native finished fourth at the Pacific West Conference Championships. Reeves finished second at the same race on the same course in 2024 with a time of 21:09. In winning on Saturday, she becomes the first PLNU runner to win a race since 2019.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Biola Eagles                                                                                                                                        
Biola debuted in 2025 in impressive fashion with a first place finish at their own Biola Invitational on Friday. The Eagles finished with 43 teams points, edging Simon Fraser (51) and 14 total teams. Bethany Mapes was the top Eagle runner in second place with a time of 17:53 on the 5K course, trailing only SFU's Rachael Watkins (17:46). Coach Sean Henning's team had four runners in the top 10, including Madison Ebright in seventh (18:13), Hailey Wurzbach in eighth (18:13) and Jaina Kang (18:25) in tenth. Elizabeth Kurtz (18:43) rounded out the scoring with a 17th place crossing.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: At Biola's meet in Fullerton, Concordia finished in third place among 15 teams with 101 points, clipping Division I Grand Canyon (104) and CSU Monterey Bay (133). Last week's Runner of the Week Ania Kapustka finished fifth in the field of 148 runners with a 5K time of 18:06. Emily Littlefield was next for the Golden Eagles in 22nd (18:50) followed closely by Olivia Reed (23rd, 18:51)...Azusa Pacific was seventh in Fullerton with 198 points, top runner was Naomi Sotelo in 29th (19:01). Westmont was tenth with 292 points, led by Sophie Stoddart in 45th (19:35)...Point Loma, ranked sixth in the west region, just missed knocking off #3 Cal Poly Pomona in San Marcos by a 33-38 score. In addition to Maddie Reeves' award winning run (see above), PLNU's Audrey Buckely was seventh on the 6K course (21:29), Elizabeth Satterlee was tenth (21:32), Jocelyn Gibson was 11th (21:32) and Zaila Smith placed 13th (21:35)...Dominican ran at Stanislaus State's Kim Duyst XC Invitational on Saturday evening, racing against a loaded field. The race was won by the host Warriors (75 points) with Sacramento State a close second (76). The Penguins were 14th with Bella Bueno clocking the best race for DUC with a time of 23:54 on the 6K course. Jessup also competed and didn't have a team score but featured Angela Gladysh in 78th place (22:47). 

LOOKING AHEAD: Just two races are on the schedule for next Saturday (Sept. 20). The Master's College will host a race that PacWest teams Fresno Pacific, Azusa Pacific, Vanguard and Westmont will compete at, while Chaminade will host Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo.
