Point Loma Sweeps Sharks to Start Conference Season

The Sea Lions win four at home behind solid pitching. JU, FPU and CUI begin PacWest play at 3-1.

The opening of Pacific West Conference play saw Point Loma pull of a stunning sweep of Hawaii Pacific, the 2025 conference tournament runner-up. The Sea Lions used light’s out pitching throughout, including Vaughn Neckar’s near no-hitter. Jessup freshman Jayden Montero helped his team win three of four with .600 hitting, driving in five runs.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jayden Montero, Jessup, Fr., INF, 5-7, 180, Waipahu, Hawai`i
Jessup’s Jayden Montero played a big role at the plate to help his Warriors take three of four games against Vanguard in their PacWest opening series. The freshman from Oahu went 6-for-10, drove in five runs, scored four times and had a double. He was perfect in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, going 2-for-2 in a 9-4 win and then 3-for-3 in a 21-7 Jessup victory. Through seven games as a redshirt-freshman, Montero is hitting .412.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Vaughn Neckar, Point Loma, Fr., RHP, 6-3, 195, Murrieta, Calif.
Making his third start as a Point Loma Sea Lion, Vaughn Neckar was almost perfect. The 6-foot-3 righthander had a no-hitter through 6.1 innings against Hawai`i Pacific before allowing his first and only hit. The southern California native, who redshirted at Oklahoma last season, completed the seven inning game allowing just that one hit and a walk, while also striking out six Sharks. He totaled 87 pitches in improving to 3-0 on the season.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Point Loma Sea Lions. The Sea Lions jumped out to a 4-0 PacWest start with victories by the scores of 12-2, 6-0, 10-0 and 9-8. Vaughn Neckar (see above) was nearly perfect with a complete-game one-hitter in the 6-0 win, and Glen Huggins was very close to the same level with seven innings of shutout work in the 10-0 win, giving up two hits, one walk and he fanned five. Offensively, Tristan Moore drove in six runs with two home runs in the series, and Josiah Rodriguez followed with those exact same numbers. Point Loma is now 8-3 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.

NCBWA WEST REGION POLL: The west coast baseball writer's third poll has the PacWest well represented with four teams, all in the top eight. 1.
