The rest of the league standings remain a mess, with the final countdown week to come. Meanwhile, Hawaii Hilo’s Julio Montes II put up the highest scoring total in the PacWest this season with 35 against Azusa Pacific.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Hilo’s Julio Montes II, G, Sr., 5-11, Chicago, Ill.
Hawaii Hilo’s Julio Montes II dropped in 35 points in a narrow 79-76 loss to Azusa Pacific, putting himself at the top of single-game performance chart in the PacWest this year. The Chicago native hit 13 of 23 shots, including 3 of 5 from three-point range and he nailed all six of his free throw attempts. For the week in three games, the 5-11 guard average almost 25 points a game with six rebounds, seven assists and six steals. He shot 50 percent from the field (24-48), 50 percent from behind the arch (7-14) and converted 19 of 20 free throw opportunities.
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Andrew Hommes, F, Jr., 6-6, Lynden, Wash.
Point Loma’s Andrew Hommes is the Defender of the Week, leading the Sea Lions to a pair of wins while holding their opponents to 60 points a game. The Sea Lions took out Vanguard 89-61 and then shut down Concordia, 85-59. “Andrew Hommes has been the premier defender in the PacWest all year long,” said his coach
Justin Downer. “His ability to guard every position on the floor, to go along with his rim protection has made our defense so versatile. He has regularly checked the other teams top player and to his credit that player has had an off night more often than not.”
TEAM OF THE WEEK: The
Point Loma Sea Lions became the first team this year to clinch a tournament berth (last week), this week clinched a share of the title and then won the title outright with a Homecoming win over Concordia. That’s PLNU’s fifth straight outright or shared title, a PacWest record. The Sea Lions are now 22-4 on the season and 17-3 in conference play. In the 89-61 win over Vanguard,
Caden Harris had 24 points and
Andrew Nagy had 23, while in the 85-59 victory over Concordia it was
Tyce Paulsen pacing with 16 points,
Andrew Hommes adding 14 points and seven rebounds and
Jordan Matingou contributed 13 points and six assists.
