Meanwhile, we have our six for the PacWest Championships, March 5-7 in San Diego, which includes Concordia who had a game for the ages from Asia Darcuiel.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Concordia’s Asia Darcuiel, G, Fr., 5-8, San Diego, Calif.
Concordia’s Asia Darcuiel
etched her place in PacWest and Concordia history last week during a road upset of Point Loma. The freshman dropped in 45 points, the second highest total in PacWest history, and the most since Samantha Murphy of Grand Canyon had 49 in 2010. That total is also third highest in the CUI record book, and the most in their Division II era. Darcuiel’s career night came in her hometown of San Diego as the Golden Eagles upset Point Loma 90-84 in overtime. She hit 19 of 28 shots, was 7 of 10 from the free throw line and had six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Her 19 field goals ties the PacWest record for most in a game.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Westmont’s Lisa Kiefer, F, Sr., 6-2, Marburg, Germany
Westmont’s Lisa Kiefer earned her ninth PacWest Defender of the Week award, second all-time in conference history (behind APU Laura Pranger’s 11) and her second consecutive DOW honor. The senior also had a Player of the Week award earlier in the year, giving her nine total awards, fourth all-time.  This week, the German totaled 26 rebounds and eight steals as the Warriors topped Dominican and Menlo. She also had 26 points total, and had double-doubles in each contest. She added five assists in the win over the Oaks.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Vanguard is the Team of the Week after moving into first place with victories over Point Loma and Biola. The Lions are now 20-4 overall and 16-3 in the PacWest, and have won eight straight. In the titan match-up with the Sea Lions, VU held Point Loma to 56 points in the 66-56 triumph, led by Micaela Hanning’s 19 points and Kaylee Byon’s 12 points, nine assists and six boards. In a 67-65 overtime nailbiter over Biola, Byon had 20 points and seven assists as Vanguard roared back from a 19-point third quarter deficit with a 20-6 fourth period. In overtime, Byon hit the game winner with 10 seconds left.

ROAD TO SAN DIEGO: While we have our six for the PacWest Championships, March 5-7 in San Diego, there is still much mystery surrounding the fight for the regular season title. Only 1.5 games separate the top four teams, with Vanguard holding a half-game edge in first place over Westmont.  Here’s the top six, the qualifiers for the tournament, with seeding to still be determined. (1) Vanguard 16-3, (2) Westmont 16-4, (T3) Point Loma 15-5, (T3) Azusa Pacific 15-5, (5) Dominican 13-7, (6) Concordia 12-8. Both Vanguard and Westmont hit the road this week, with the Warriors having the toughest draw traveling to title contenders Azusa Pacific and Point Loma.
