Point Loma ran past No. 6 Northwest Nazarene 76-61 on Friday afternoon in the NCAA West Region opening round at Pioneer Gym.
The Sea Lions advance to Saturday's 5 pm semifinal bout versus the winner of Hawaii Pacific and St. Martin's, which tips shortly. The PacWest Conference regular season and tournament champs move on with a 26-5 records, while the Nighthawks season ends at 18-11.
Point Loma opened the game cool, netting only two of their first seven three-point attempts and trailed by six. But the Sea Lions soon caught fire and with 8:30 to go in the first half they led 23-16 after a Nagy three-pointer. A
Judson Loe basket pushed the lead to 25-16 with 7:54 left, and Point Loma was off and running.
PLNU would lead 37-27 at the break, with Nagy leading the way with 12 points and five boards.
A three-point play by
Andrew Hommes made it 59-44 with 8:41 to go. Point Loma would lead by as many as 19 points before settling for the final tally of 76-61.
Nagy would hit 9-of-15 shots to arrive at his 22 points, and he also had eight rebounds. Harris had 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Hommes added 13 points.
Jaden Matingou finished with eight assists and three steals.
Point Loma, who hit 20 three-pointers in the PacWest championship game, would finish with eight in 20 tries today. They shot 60 percent from the field in the second half to help cool off any NNU run.
This is the second straight year and third time in their last four appearances that Point Loma has won their opening round game at the NCAA tournament.
