HAYWARD, Calif.--No. 7 seed
Hawaii Pacific came just a few minutes away from pulling off the first upset of the men's NCAA West Region men's basketball tournament.
But the No. 2 seed Saint Martin's Saints rallied back in the final moments to take a 75-68 victory over the Sharks to advance to Saturday's semifinals, where they will take on Point Loma at 5 pm in Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Sharks wrap up a very successful season at 18-12, while the Saint advance at 26-5.
After falling behind 9-4 in the opening moments, the Sharks went on a 11-0 run to take a 27-19 lead on a
Quintin Meza floater. A few moments late
Josh Niusulu's free throws gave HPU a 33-22 margin. The Sharks would add another digit and take a 36-25 lead into the halftime locker room.
HPU would push their margin to 43-29 a few moments into the second half, but the Saints would then begin their comeback. The GNAC champs would cut the margin to four points twice late in the second half and then took their first lead since early in the game on a three-pointer by Trey Delgado with just over six minutes left.
That was part of what ultimately would be a 13-0 St. Martin's run. HPU would get within one point on a
Joshua West basket with 1:30 remaining but that would be their last score as SMU hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
The Saints hit 7 of 16 treys in the second half to help fuel their comeback.
West led the Sharks with 16 points and he also had nine rebounds. Meza finished with 15 points and Niusulu had 11.
Maj Dusanic led the HPU board work with 12.
