Golden Eagles Upend Sea Lions, Rodriguez and Mata Work Way to Awards

Concordia stuns Point Loma with three wins in four tries. Chaminade's Mata has 13 hits in five games and Menlo's Rodriguez throws a two-hit shutout.

Concordia rose up to take three of four games from first place Point Loma, sweeping the Sea Lions in San Diego and splitting in Irvine. Chaminade’s Chris Mata had 13 hits in five games, including three home runs and Menlo’s Nolan Rodriguez had a career day with a two-hit shutout against Vanguard.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chaminade's Chris Mata, Jr., UTL/P, 5-8, R/R, Wailuku, Hawaii                        
Chaminade's Chris Mata had 13 hits in five games last week for the Silverswords (.520). The utility player, who also pitched three innings in relief, hit three home runs, drove in five from his lead-off spot and scored seven times. The Maui native had two home runs in a Tuesday game against Hawaii Pacific, and he went 4-for-6 in one of the games against Fresno Pacific. Mata went 6-for-10 in Saturday's doubleheader against the Sunbirds with four runs scored, a double and a home run. This is Chaminade's first Player of the Week award since reviving baseball in 2024.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Menlo's Nolan Rodriguez, Jr., RHP, 6-1, 200, San Jose, Calif.                        
Menlo's Nolan Rodriguez shutout Vanguard 1-0 in a seven-inning complete game whitewash. The junior righthander had a career high with the seven innings and with seven strikeouts, while also allowing just two hits and three walks in a tidy 99-pitch performance. Both of the hits Rodriguez gave up were in the third inning and he settled in after that to hold the Lions hitless the rest of the way. This is Menlo's first Pitcher of the Week award. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Concordia Golden Eagles. CUI stunned Point Loma, who came into the series ranked anywhere from 2-5 in the national polls, by winning three of four games. The Golden Eagles won two games in San Diego on Friday by the scores of 9-2 and 6-2, and then won a narrow game in Irvine 3-2 before falling in the last game of the series, 11-1. Matthew Kaiser threw a complete game in one of those wins with nine strikeouts and just one run, and Wyatt Madison notched a win with just two earned runs in six innings of work. CUI moved into fourth place in the PacWest with the victories, improving to 17-11 in conference play.

SEA LIONS GETTING NATIONAL NOTICE: There are four national polls, and Point Loma was top five in each of them last week. They are second in Perfect Game, fourth in the ABCA and fifth in the NCBWA and D2 Baseball.

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: With about a month left in the regular season, PacWest series in play this week are Fresno Pacific at Hawaii Pacific, Jessup at Menlo, Westmont at Concordia, Biola at Azusa Pacific and Point Loma at Hawaii Hilo. To see the complete schedule, click here.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Azusa Pacific went 4-1 last week by taking three of four from Jessup and they also topped Vanguard in a single game. Blake Hagerty hit two home runs in one of the wins over the Warriors and Joel Tornero struck out eight in a five-inning performance and gave up just one run…Westmont won three of four games against Hawaii Hilo to improve to 17-6 in PacWest play and 20-6 overall…Fresno Pacific swept Chaminade in four games, with Aaron Martinez leading the offense (.538) with five doubles and five RBI. Matt Bettencourt threw a shutout in the series finale, going seven innings while allowing only five hits and two walks…In Point Loma’s lone series win against CUI, Devin Norton fanned five in five innings, allowed one run and four hits…Menlo’s Oliver Hogan extended his hitting streak to nine games and hit for the series cycle against Vanguard. Hogan hit .437 in the four games and had a walk-off winner against the Lions…Jessup’s Tony Otis hit three home runs and drove in seven in their series against Azusa Pacific…In about five weeks, four teams will qualify for the Pacific West Conference Championships, May 6-8 in Santa Barbara.
