SAN DIEGO—Cal Poly Pomona built a 7-0 lead through four innings of play and then watched a
Point Loma comeback for the ages during a 14-13 Sea Lion 11-inning victory on Thursday in NCAA playoff action at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
The Sea Lions will now play on Friday at noon against CSU San Bernardino, who defeated Cal Poly Pomona earlier in the day. The two squads will play at least one game again on Saturday at 11 am and another if necessary.
CPP scored once in the first inning, three times in the second, two more times in the third and added another run in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.
But the Sea Lions began to inch back in what would become a theme for the day. They got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a solo home run from
Mason Cook and added an unearned run in the sixth to make it 7-2.
The Broncos pushed across two more runs in the seven to make it 9-2, but the Sea Lions didn’t fold.
Tristan Moore hit a three-run shot in the seventh and
Jack Ryan hit a two-run bomb in the eighth to cut the margin to 9-7.
After CPP went scoreless in the top of the ninth, Point Loma went back to work. After a Moore walk,
Hank Smith doubled and
Aiden Arriaga singled him home to make it 9-8. A force play at home left the bases loaded, but
Jake Schwartz worked a walk to bring home the tying run (9-9), sending the game to extras.
Nonetheless, the Broncos struck again in the top of the tenth. A hit, two hit batters and a based loaded single brought home two runners to make it 11-9 heading into the bottom half of the stanza.
In the bottom half, a
Matt Bernath double, three walks and a wild pitch notched the game at 11-11. In both the 9
th and 10
th, the Sea Lions left the bases loaded.
The run barrage continued in the top of the 11
th when the Broncos plated two more runners to make it 13-11. But once again, the home team used a walk and singles by Moore and
Josiah Rodriguez to set the table for Smith, who singled home two to tie it at 13-13. One batter later
Ryan Ruch singled to right field to bring the winning run home and send the Sea Lions into celebration.
Three times, Point Loma looked at a two-run deficit heading into the bottom of the inning, only to rally back each time.
Cal Poly Pomona had 20 hits in the game. Point Loma had 16 base knocks, including three each by Moore and Smith.
Point Loma will head into the series against the Coyotes with a 45-10 record. Cal Poly Pomona’s season ends at 30-25.
