SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--Point Loma's Hank Smith hit a grand slam in the fifth and smashed a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Sea Lions a 9-2 win over
Westmont on Wednesday morning at Russ Carr Field.
The victory vaults the No. 1 seeded Sea Lions into Thursday's 12:30 game against the winner of this afternoon's contest between Concordia and Fresno Pacific. The Warriors, the No. 4 seed, will play the loser of that game tomorrow morning at 9 am.
The two teams were scoreless through three innings before PLNU got on the board in the fourth on
Owen May's RBI-double. But Smith busted open the game in the fifth with a grand slam and then followed that up in his next at-bat with a three-run shot. Westmont worked a run across the plate in the sixth on
Tanner Beltowski's home run, but the damage had already been done, courtesty of Smith's bat.
Meanwhile, Point Loma pitcher
Matt Garrison came out of the bullpen before the game even started in relief of slotted starter
Vaughn Neckar. Garrison responded to the emergency call with five innings of one-hit baseball, allowing just two walks and he fanned six.
Smith led the Point Loma offense of course, but
Josiah Rodriguez also had three hits for the Sea Lions, including a pair of doubles.
The Sea Lions improved to 42-10 on the season while Westmont is now 29-20.
