LA MIRADA, Calif.—Less than 24 hours after their first square off in the PacWest Softball Championships,
Biola and
Concordia will battle again in the title match on Thursday.
That’s because the Eagles, after falling to Concordia earlier today 6-3, stayed alive with a 11-2 win over
Jessup tonight in an elimination game. That leads to a noon game tomorrow, with the Golden Eagles in the driver’s seat. Biola will need to beat the regular season champs twice to win the tournament title.
But for now, they can enjoy living to see another day after winning via mercy rule.
Lillianna Garcia hit a three-run homer in the third inning and the Eagles never trailed after that in rolling to the six-inning win.
Ariana Banos singled home a run in the first,
Kendall Nakano hit an RBI-double in the fourth and
Alexa Sheard singled home an Eagle in that same inning. In the fifth, Biola added more damage when Banos hit a double to chase home
Mikayla Huskey, who had singled and stole second base. Banos scored on a wild pitch and BU scored again on
Cami Lara’s base knock to make it 9-1.
But Jessup still had another at-bat in the bottom of the fifth and
Maddy Ybarra kept the game alive with a monster shot over the centerfield scoreboard to make it 9-2. Biola then finalized the deal in the top of the sixth on
Janessa Hernandez’s two-run bomb to push the score to 11-2.
DJ Symons, who entered the game in the second inning, kept the Warriors scoreless in the sixth to secure the victory. She got the win in 4.1 innings of work with four hits, two runs, no walks and four K’s.
Huskey had three hits for the Eagles, and
Kennadie Tsue, Banos and
Jackie Ibarra had two each. Ybarra had two hits for the Warriors.
Biola advances with a 37-20 record, while Jessup’s season ends at 26-24.
Up next is their arch rival Concordia.
"We have been here before," said Biola head coach
Kristin Halte. "We have to win two, but this is a resiliant bunch. We will be ready for tomorrow."
"We were blessed to be here for our first time," said Jessup head coach Brie Campbell. "This is a good step for our program."
