LA MIRADA, Calif.--Jessup scored seven runs in the second inning to make
Hawaii Hilo play catch-up the rest of the way during a 10-2 win in an elimination game on Wednesday afternoon at Freedom Field.
The win keeps the Warriors season alive, but they won't have much time to enjoy as they turn around to play Biola at 5:30 in another elimination game. The winner advances to Thursday's championship round against Concordia, beginning at noon.
Hawaii Hilo, the No. 3 seed, ends their season at 26-17. Jessup is now 26-23.
The Warriors stunned the Vulcans early with the seven spot in inning two. They did so on a combination of ways, including four hits, two UHH errors, three walks, a stolen base and a wild pitch. A combination of bunts and the hits sent seven runners across the plate, with the biggest blow coming off the bat of
Maddy Ybarra with a two-run triple.
Hilo battled back with a pair of runs in the fourth on
Kaiya Miller's two-run single, but Jessup starting pitcher
Korrie Almond kept the Vulcans off the board the rest of the way. She finished with just the two earned runs, eight hits and she struck out two.
Ybarra finished with two hits for the Warriors, as did
Reagann Hoblit and
Kaiya Miller. Miller also had two RBI.
Rayna White and
Lexie Tilton led the Vulcans with two hits each.
"I am proud of this group, especially our eight seniors," said Hilo head coach
Aisha Sueda. "This wasn't how they wanted to go out, but they have set a legacy here for this program, getting to the PacWest tournament two of the past three seasons. I am very proud of them."
