Men’s Soccer Weekly Awards – Nov. 2

IRVINE, Calif. – This week’s PacWest Men’s Soccer Players of the Week are Renato Bustamante (Fresno Pacific), Tyler Matas (NDNU) and Alex Clewis (NDNU). The awards are based on games played Oct. 26-Nov. 1.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Renato Bustamante (Fresno Pacific)
M, Sr., Lima, Peru/Truman College

Bustamante led FPU to a pair of convincing wins last week with six points as the Sunbirds scored 16 total goals. In a 7-3 win over Holy Names, the senior captain scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute and then tallied the game-winning goal in the 57th. Bustamante then dished out two assists in a 9-2 win over Concordia, which marked a season-high for goals for the Sunbirds and the highest scoring output since 2004. Bustamante leads the PacWest in points (30) and assists (12), while FPU ranks first in the conference with a 3.176 scoring average and holds a three-point lead in the quest for its first conference title.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Matas (Notre Dame de Namur)
D, Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii/Mililani

Matas anchored an NDNU defense that earned two shutout wins on the week, and was a historic distributor in one game. NDNU held Academy of Art and Holy Names to just 12 total shots, including only seven on goal. Matas recorded four assists in the 7-0 win over HNU, tying the PacWest single-game record set by HPU’s Alejandro Porras in 2012. His four assists were the most in a game in the NCAA this year.

Alex Clewis (Notre Dame de Namur)
GK, Fr.-RS, Concord, Calif./San Francisco Flex

Clewis played all 180 minutes in goal for NDNU, earning two shutouts. He made five saves in the two games combined.
