SAN DIEGO--Point Loma's highly successful campaign and postseason run came to a close in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.
Midwestern State's Dereck Espinal tapped a deflected shot into an empty net in the first overtime (97:47) to send the Mustangs to a 3-2 victory and a berth in the NCAA Final Four next weekend in Colorado Springs (Dec. 12-14). MSU's victory in the NCAA Quarterfinals and Super Region 4 Championship continues a magical postseason run that included an upset win over No. 1 seed Stanislaus State last week.
Point Loma's championship year ends with a Pacific West Conference title, a PacWest tournament championship, two NCAA tournament victories and a final record of 16-4-2.
The Mustangs, from the Lone Star Conference, got on the board quickly in front of a large crowd on a beautiful sunny San Diego day. Parker Plaxco scored in the 11th minute to put the team from Texas on the board first, and that margin held until the halftime break.
But the Sea Lions answered at 59:01 on
Elijah Langford's 13th goal of the season, set up by passes from
Curtis Collazo and
Inaki Santamarina. Still, Midwestern State quickly took the lead back five minutes later on a long goal from Gabriel Gacovlcaj to make it 2-1.
It looked like that lead might hold up until
Diego Chavez sent the large home crowd into a frenzy with a score at 83:57, tying the match at 2-2 and sending the affair into extra time. Chavez finished a process started by
Shawn O'Brien and
Emmett Layman to keep PLNU's hopes alive.
The two teams traded opportunities in the first seven minutes of sudden death before Espanal took a deflected shot off the Point Loma keeper and pushed it into the goal.
The match was evenly played throughout, with Midwestern State, now 17-3-3 on the season, holding a slight edge in shots (15-13), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (6-4).
Point Loma's advancement to the Super Region 4 championship is the best for a PacWest team in this format.
