CBU, BYUH Upset Top Seeds in Men’s Semifinals

IRVINE, Calif. –  Upsets on both sides of the bracket on the second day of the PacWest Men’s Basketball Championship. No. 3 California Baptist and No. 4 BYU-Hawaii both beat top seeds in commanding fashion. The Lancers and Seasiders will face off in the championship game Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
 
Cal Baptist 78 – Azusa Pacific 67

After a set of early technical fouls, momentum hung with Cal Baptist as they defeated conference rival Azusa Pacific, 78-67.
 
Cal Baptist came out shooting 63 percent in the first half, and never gave the Cougars a chance to catch up. The Lancers led the whole game fueled by the energy by a huge crowd.
 
Taj Spencer had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Other huge contributors for the Lancers were Gelaun Wheelwright with 20 points and Ryan Berg with 19. Troy Leaf had a standout game for the Cougars with 26 points and four rebounds.
 
BYU-Hawaii 98 – Dixie State 75

BYU-Hawaii continued its hot shooting, beating Dixie State, 98-75, to reach the tournament final for the first time. The Seasiders shot 55 percent from the floor in the second-consecutive game, made 11 three-pointers and came one point shy of the tournament record for points.
 
Scott Friel tied the tournament record with 31 points, shooting 13-for-18 to break the field goal record as well. He added six rebounds and three steals. Ian Harward chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
 
Dixie State was led by Zach Robbins’ 16 points and three blocks. Mark Ogden had 14 points and four rebounds. The Red Storm shot 50 percent from the field.
