CBU, Dixie State Win NCAA Openers

ST. GEORGE, Utah. – California Baptist and Dixie State both won their first games in the NCAA West Regional, setting up an all-PacWest winner’s bracket game on Friday. The two will square off for the fifth time this season at 11 a.m. MDT.

Third-seed CBU slugged past sixth-seed Chico State, 8-1, in the first game of the tournament. The Lancers scored eight-straight runs across three innings. Savannah Miller went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Sarah Murphy went 2-for-3 with three RBI. The two also combined to throw out a runner at the plate in the first inning, cutting off a potential big inning for the Wildcats. Loie Kesterson earned the complete game win, scattering five hits.

Second-seed Dixie State held off a late rally from fifth-seed Saint Martin’s for a 7-5 win. Nicole Chavez drove in four, including a three-run home run that put the Red Storm ahead 7-0 in the sixth inning. Michelle Duncan threw 6.1 shutout innings before surrendering five runs in the seventh inning. Aryn Feickert came on for the final out and the save.
