Eagles Pull Off Another Stunner, Top Pioneers, 3-2

Biola advances to the NCAA Super Regional next week, taking on either CSU San Marcos, or CSU Dominguez Hills.

HAYWARD, Calif.—This time, there was no comeback needed but there was still plenty of drama during Biola’s 3-2 regional championship win over CSU East Bay on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

The Eagles, who had to rally for 1-run wins against Concordia and Western Washington previously, today took a 3-2 lead after four innings and then held on for the clinching win against the host Pioneers.

That sends the #6 seeded Eagles to next week’s NCAA West Super Regional, against either CSU San Marcos or CSU Dominguez Hills. That best 2-of-3 series is set for May 21-22.

Biola had their work cut out for them today against the #2 seed and host. But they got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first via Mikayla Huskey’s two-run double. That 2-0 lead held until the fourth when the Pioneers scored twice with a couple of singles, two walks and a hit by pitch to make it 2-2.

But Biola quickly answered back in the bottom of the inning. Kennadie Tsue tripled and came home on Leilani Salgado’s double to make it 3-2. The Eagles would go on to load the bases with a chance to add insurance, but a ground ball double play ended the rally.

In the top of the sixth, the Pioneers loaded the bases, bringing in DJ Symons in relief of Kayla Bousquette. Symons put out the fire, and then put CSU East Bay down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

That was Symon’s sixth save of the season, while Bousquette improved to 17-5 with 5.1 innings, five hits, two earned runs and a strikeout.

Jackie Ibarra had three of BU’s seven hits, and Huskey had two.

Biola, the PacWest Conference runner-up and tournament silver medalist, moves on in NCAA postseason play with a 41-21 record. Ranked No. 16 nationally, CSU East Bay’s ends their year at 43-17.
