APU Picked to Repeat as PacWest Men’s Soccer Champs

2015 Preseason All-PacWest Men's Soccer

IRVINE, Calif.
– Azusa Pacific was picked to repeat as PacWest men’s soccer champion in the annual conference coach’s poll, released Wednesday. The Cougars are the conference preseason favorite for the second-consecutive season.

Azusa Pacific received 12 of the possible 14 first-place votes. APU won its first PacWest men’s soccer title last season and earned its first bid to the NCAA Championship.

Fresno Pacific claimed the second spot, followed closely by CBU and Notre Dame de Namur. FPU and NDNU each earned a first-place vote. BYU-Hawaii and Point Loma rounded out the top-half of the poll.

FPU senior Renato Bustamante was named Preseason PacWest Player of the Year. A first-team All-PacWest honoree last season, he ranked eighth in the conference with 14 points on five goals and four assists. He recorded a hat trick in a win over BYU-Hawaii.

NDNU senior Tyler Matas was named Preseason PacWest Defender of the Year for the second-consecutive season (sharing the honor with HPU’s Olivier Rolland in 2014). He earned All-PacWest honors for the third-consecutive time last season, recording two goals and three assists.

APU junior Tyler Jaramillo was named Preseason PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year. He anchored the top defense in the PacWest, leading the conference in goals-against average (.987) and recording three shutouts.

Azusa Pacific led the conference with four Preseason All-PacWest selections, followed by Fresno Pacific with three.
