IRVINE, Calif. – The PacWest Conference is saddened to announce the recent passing of Dan Hooper, the conference’s Basketball Supervisor of Officials for the last decade. Hooper passed away on Monday, Oct. 17, due to a heart ailment.
Hooper, 76, had served as an officials’ coordinator for the past 25 years, including 10 with the PacWest Conference. He established the Sacramento Association of Collegiate Officials (SACO), which assigns officials to D-II, D-III, NAIA and Junior Colleges in California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. He was also heavily involved in officials training seminars throughout the region.
“Dan has not only been an outstanding supervisor – working with fairness, integrity and enthusiasm – but he as also a great friend to so many of us in the PacWest. We will dearly miss him,” said PacWest Commissioner
Bob Hogue.
Hooper is survived by his three daughters, Denise, Deidra, and Anna, one son, Dan, and four grandchildren. The family requests that any condolences and thoughts be sent via email to

In lieu of flowers, the Hooper family has established the Dan Hooper SACO Award, which will be awarded to one SACO referee on an annual basis that exemplifies excellence in officiating and continues Dan’s legacy of the 4 E’s – Effort, Engage, Enthusiasm, and Enforce.
