IRVINE, Calif. – This week’s PacWest Baseball Players of the Week are
Antonio Chavarria (California Baptist),
Kellen Sheppard (Point Loma) and
Brett Bovee (Academy of Art). The awards are based on games played May 2-10.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Antonio Chavarria (CBU)
1B, Sr., Indio, Calif./Indio
Chavarria won his second weekly honor by leading CBU to the 2016 PacWest Baseball Championship in its series with Azusa Pacific. In the four games he hit .444 (8-18) with four extra-base hits, 8 RBI and five runs scored. He went 6-for-8 in the season-ending doubleheader sweep, hitting a solo home run in the first game that clinched the title and two three-run home runs in the second game. The reigning PacWest Player of the Year ended the regular season fourth in the PacWest in runs (47) and home runs (12), seventh in hits (64) and eighth in RBI (42).
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Kellen Sheppard (Point Loma)
RHP, Jr., Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista
Sheppard earned his second weekly honor with his second complete game victory of the season. He took the mound in the first game of Point Loma’s four-game sweep of Fresno Pacific, allowing only one run, four hits and one walk, while striking out six. He did not allow a hit until a solo home run in the fifth inning broke up his shutout. He also hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Sheppard finished the season at 8-4 and was third in the PacWest in opponent’s batting average (.234).
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Brett Bovee (Academy of Art)
RHP, Jr., Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada
Bovee tossed his third complete game of the season against Holy Names to earn his second weekly honor. He was the hard-luck loser in a 2-1 game, allowing one earned run on two hits. He struck out a career-high 10, the second-most in program history, and walked none on 150 pitches.
