Otters Take Out Warriors Twice to End Westmont's Season

CS Monterey Bay wins 6-2 and 6-4 games to advance to NCAA Super Regional. Westmont's season ends at 43-14.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--With their backs against the wall, CS Monterey Bay needed to win twice on Saturday to keep their season alive. And that's just what they did.

The Otters topped Westmont by 6-2 and 6-4 scores to move to next week's NCAA Super Regional against either Point Loma or Northwest Nazarene. The Warriors, the PacWest regular season and tournament champions wrap up their title campaign at 43-14.

CS MONTEREY BAY 6, WESTMONT 2
Joey Rico got the start for Westmont and looked terrific through three scoreless innings. Finally in the fourth, the Otters broke through with Cole Murchison's home run to take a 1-0 lead.

CSUMB, the No. 3 seed, added two more runs in the fourth and held that 3-0 lead into the eighth. That's when Westmont got on the board when Grant Yzermans singled and eventually came home on Bryce McFeely's base hit. Daniel Patterson added a home run to pull the Warriors to within a run at 3-2.

But the CCAA champs pulled away in the bottom of the eighth on Murchison's three-run homer, and the Warriors couldn't answer in the ninth.

CS MONTEREY BAY 6, WESTMONT 4
The Otters carried the momentum into the title game, scoring three runs in the top of the first and another in the third for a 4-0 lead.

But Westmont battled back in the fourth with home runs by Patterson and Jesse Di Maggio to make it 4-3. The Otters would add another couple of plate crossings in the sixth to add to the 6-3 tally.

Trey Dunn went yard for the Warriors in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be it for the scoring. Westmont loaded the bases in the eighth but didn't score and they left a runner stranded at second in the ninth.

Shane Hofstadler went 3-for-4 for the home team, who had lost just two games all season (23-2) at Russ Carr Field prior today.
