Nighthawks Rally Back for 3-2 Win over Sea Lions

Point Loma's season ends at 39-18 after a gritty run through the postseason.

NAMPA, IDAHO--Host and No. 1 seed Northwest Nazarene scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish to win the Nampa Pod of the NCAA West Region tournament on Saturday night at Elmer W. Vail Field.

Point Loma's season comes to an end with 39 wins, after a gritty run through the PacWest and NCAA West Region tournaments. The Sea Lions lost the opening game of this tournament, then won twice before falling by the one run tonight.

NNU starter Cole Calnon had PLNU's number early, not allowing a hit through four innings. Meahwhile, Bryan Rojas gave the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead with a home run in the third inning.

Point Loma got their first hits in the fifth, singles by Josiah Rodriguez and Noah Meffert, but they didn't plate any runs. In the top of the seventh, the Sea Lions got on the board twice, using a combination of two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a single by Rodriguez to take a 2-1 lead.

But NNU, coached by former Point Loma head coach Joe Schaeffer, answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning in what turned out to be the winning runs. Wade Duncan came out of the bullpen and pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit.

The Sea Lions, the defending NCAA West Region champion, was making their fourth straight regional appearance.
