IRVINE, Calif. – Dixie State beat Western Washington on Friday to advance to the Monterey Bay Regional final. California Baptist suffered its second one-run loss, and was eliminated from the Chico Regional.
Dixie State plays Sonoma State at noon in the first game of the championship round. The Trailblazers need one win to advance to the Super Regional, while Sonoma State needs to win twice. A second game will be played at 3 p.m., if necessary.
Dixie State 5 – Western Washington 0 (Monterey Bay Regional)
No. 4 Dixie State beat No. 8 Western Washington, 5-0, to stay unbeaten in the Monterey Bay Regional. The Trailblazers took advantage of five Viking errors and
Brooklyn Beardshear threw a five-hit shutout.
Dixie State scored in the first inning on a wild pitch, then added two more in the second after an error by the shortstop extended the inning. The Trailblazers tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Bailey Gaffin was 2-for-4 with two RBI, giving her three in the regional.
Beardshear tossed her eighth complete game shutout of the year, striking out three. She only allowed three runners to reach second base all game.
Chico State 4 – California Baptist 3 (Chico State Regional)
No. 7 California Baptist fell to No. 3 Chico State in an elimination game, ending the Lancers’ fourth-consecutive postseason run. CBU rallied with three runs in the last two innings and had the potential tying run on base when the game ended.
Chico State led 4-0 after the third inning and held CBU to three hits through the first five innings. CBU broke through in the sixth, when
London Miller led off with a home run to left field. CBU put two more runners on and a run scored later in the inning on a passed ball, cutting the deficit in half at 4-2.
CBU kept Chico State scoreless in the top of the seventh, despite the Wildcats putting runners on second and third with one out.
Krista Mann led off the bottom of the frame with a double, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a Miller single to right center. There were two outs, however, and the rally came to an end as the next batter grounded out to second.
CBU ended the season with a 36-13 record.
