Dixie State Loses Super Regional Opener in Extra Innings

ARCATA, Calif. – Dixie State lost the first game of the NCAA West Super Regional to Humboldt State, 3-2, in eight innings on Thursday. The fourth-seed Trailblazers must beat the second-seed Lumberjacks twice on Friday to win the regional title.
 
Dixie State struck first in the first inning, with Janessa Bassett opening the game with a single, stealing second, advancing to third, and scoring on an Arista Honey single. Humboldt State tied it up in the third inning with a sacrifice fly. In the sixth inning, Bailey Gaffin hit a solo home run, but Humboldt State answered back with a solo shot of its own to keep the game tied at two.
 
The Trailblazers put a runner on in the eighth inning, but could not move her past first. In the bottom half of the inning, Humboldt State worked a leadoff walk to third with a sac bunt and a single. A ground ball to second base was enough to score the winning run and give Humboldt State the series lead.
 
Brooklyn Beardshear suffered the loss, allowing just three hits, two walks and two hit batters, and striking out eight.
