Frank & Kuprina Win ITA West Regional

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific's Oliver Frank and Concordia's Anastasia Kuprina won the 2017 ITA West Regional Championships on Saturday as each defeated their teammate in the final to advance to the National Championships in Georgia.

Frank won his second consecutive regional title as he looks to defend his national title. The Cougars' senior defeated Christian Schmid in the final 6-2, 6-0 as he remained undefeated in his career against NCAA Division II competition. The tournament's top seed went 24-0 at No. 1 singles in his first season of collegiate tennis last spring.

Frank faced his biggest challenge in the semifinals against Hawai`i Pacific freshman Lucas Franco, who pushed the 2017 PacWest Male Athlete of the Year to a third-set super tiebreaker. Frank came back from down a break in the opening set and had a change to serve it out, but was broken and eventually lost the opening set in the tiebreaker. Frank came roaring back in the second set to win it 6-1 and raced through the 10-point tiebreaker for a 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-2 semifinal victory.

Schmid needed two super tiebreakers to reach the championship match. In the quarterfinals, the No. 2 seed took out No. 7 Benjamin Loccisano from Hawai`i Pacific, 2-6, 6-3, 10-2. The senior then took out his teammate Jakob Schnaitter in three sets in the semifinals, 6-2, 1-6, 10-3. Azusa Pacific had three of the four semifinalists and Frank's semifinals win guaranteed the third all-Cougar matchup in the West Region final in the last six years.

Kuprina defeated her teammate Ghazal Pakbaten in the final, 6-2, 6-0. Kuprina entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and didn't drop a set en route to the title. In the semifinals, she blasted through No. 7 seed Klara Thell-Lenntorp for a 6-0, 6-1 win to book her spot in the final. The Eagle's toughest match came in the round of 16, where she beat Azusa Pacific's Kara Hinton, 6-2, 7-5.

Pakbaten took out the tournament's No. 1 seed in her path to the final. The freshman from Concordia beat Sonoma State's Jensyn Warren 7-6(5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she won a long 6-2, 7-6(3) match against Azusa Pacific freshman Diana Baumgartnere. The Eagles had three players in total reach the round of 16 as Johanna Keeline earned two wins before falling to top-seeded Warren.

In doubles, Academy of Art twins Klara and Alma Thell-Lenntorp won the title to punch their ticket to Georgia. The top-seeded duo overcame a 3-6 deficit in the final against Sonoma State's Warren and Amanda Zuidema to win 9-7. The duo didn't lose more than four games in any of their eight-game pro sets in their path to the final.

In the men's doubles draw, singles finalists Schmid and Frank teamed up to win the title in straight-forward fashion. The pairing beat their teammates Antonio Pejic and Schnaitter in the final, 8-2. Both of the partnerships from Azusa Pacific defeated teams from Hawai`i Pacific in the semifinals. Frank and Schmid took out Franco and Gerardo Irarrazabal by a score of 8-4 in the semifinals.

The two singles champions and four doubles champions will advance to play in the ITA Oracle Cup in Georgia on October 11.
