Biola and Azusa Pacific will continue their men's tennis seasons next week at the NCAA National Championships in Surprise, Arizona, same site that they battled last month at the PacWest Championships.
The Eagles defeated Hawai`i Pacific today (4-1) in La Mirada while the Cougars topped Point Loma (4-0) at Azusa. Both squads now advance to the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club as a part of the 16-team NCAA Championship field.
BIOLA 4, HAWAI`I PACIFIC 1
In a match that was much closer than the score would indicate, Biola won a tight home match over Hawaii Pacific, 4-1.
The two teams split the doubles matches, with the Eagles winning first on court one behind Alejandro Flores Monteverde and Angel Guerrero, 6-1. The Sharks then drew even on court two with a victory from Miles Matic and Ethan Terry, 6-4. But moments later, Biola earned the doubles point on court three behind a 6-4 win from Adam Large and Keyon Gahvarehchi.
In singles, Guerrero topped Adam Vasir on court one, 6-4, 6-3, but the Sharks answered again, this time on court six with a victory by Rene Gabriel Yung, 6-4, 6-2. The rest of the four singles matches were close battles with BU's Pol Masafret outlasting Seth Newman on court four 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), and Large then clinced on court three over Matic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The other two matches were left unfinished, with HPU's Terry one game away from a win on court two while Arthur Pery (HPU) and Juan Vallejo (BU) had split sets on court five.
Hawai`i Pacific's season ends at 13-7 while Biola makes their first NCAA Championship appearance at 17-4.
AZUSA PACIFIC 4, POINT LOMA 0
The Cougars will make their 11th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance after a 4-0 win over the Sea Lions.
